Snow White’s Box Office Is A Rarity For Disney’s Live-Action Remakes After #1 Opening Weekend

Weeks before the release of Snow White, it seemed like Disney was preparing for disaster. While it is unfortunate, especially since the original Snow White animated film is one of the most beloved Disney movies, it is undeniable that the release of the live-action adaptation truly has been disastrous. Reviews for Snow White have not been positive, with Screen Rant’s own Rachel Labonte giving it a disappointing score of 5 out of 10. Due to review bombing, Snow White is currently the lowest-rated movie on IMDb (via IMDb), which is the worst-case scenario for Disney.

In addition to people criticizing the story of the movie and the changes it makes to the 1937 animated film, the cast of Snow White has also proven to be controversial, which is the main reason it has been review bombed. Gal Gadot, an already controversial actress, gives an underwhelming and uninspired performance in Snow White. Additionally, while many reviews have claimed that Rachel Zegler is a perfect Snow White, she has been criticized for her comments and behavior while promoting the film. Because of this, Snow White has continued a disappointing live-action Disney movie streak.

Snow White Failed To Repeat As The #1 Movie At The Box Office After Record Second Weekend Drop

Snow White’s Second Weekend Box Office Performance Was Terrible

Despite the controversy surrounding the film, Snow White was the number one movie at the box office in its opening weekend. In its first weekend, the live-action Disney adaptation made a total of $42.2 million. Even though this was below the final opening weekend projections for the movie, which were $45-$55 million, Snow White had the tenth biggest opening weekend for a live-action Disney film. However, Snow White unfortunately made a lot less money at the box office in its second weekend.

Snow White grossed just $14.2 million in its second weekend at the box office, which is a 66.4% drop from its opening weekend. This significant box office drop has set an unfortunate new record for live-action Disney remakes. Previously, Dumbo’s 60.4% drop in 2019 held the record for the worst second weekend drop for Disney’s live-action movies. Snow White’s poor performance at the box office during its second weekend proves that negative word of mouth and the controversy surrounding the film have hurt its chances of success.

Only Five Other Disney Live-Action Remakes Opened At #1 & Didn’t Hold The Spot For A Second Weekend

Snow White May Not End Up Being Profitable For Disney

Even though Snow White was the most successful movie at the box office in its opening weekend, its second weekend box office earnings prove that the film may not be the success that Disney was clearly hoping for. In addition to Snow White, only five other Disney live-action remakes have opened at number one at the box office and failed to hold it for a second weekend. These movies are Maleficent, Cinderella, Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid.

While some of these movies still ended up being mᴀssive box office successes, most notably Aladdin and Maleficent, the controversy surrounding Snow White suggests that it will struggle to make money for Disney. This is especially true since it had a significant budget that was between $240-$270 million. Because of additional marketing costs, this mᴀssive budget suggests that Snow White will have to make over $500 million to break even for Disney. While this is still possible, the film will likely fall short of this box office milestone.

It’s Been Six Years Since A Disney Live-Action Remake Repeated As The #1 Movie At The Box Office

Snow White Continues A Disappointing Streak

Snow White’s disappointing second weekend at the box office continues an unfortunate streak for Disney’s live-action remakes, as it has been six years since one of them held the number one spot for two weeks in a row. 2019’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil was the last live-action Disney film to hold the number one spot at the box office for two weeks in a row. There was a time when all live-action Disney films were obviously going to be mᴀssive successes at the box office, but Snow White’s performance further proves that those days are clearly gone.

This streak proves that people are no longer as interested in live-action Disney remakes.

In the last six years, films such as Mulan, Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid, and the recently released Snow White have not been nearly as commercially and critically successful as previous live-action Disney films. While Disney has had some box office successes in the last six years, such as 2024’s Mufasa: The Lion King, this streak proves that people are no longer as interested in live-action Disney remakes.

Snow White Losing The #1 Box Office Spot Is A Bad Sign For Disney

Snow White Will Probably Not Recover At The Box Office

Snow White lost the number one spot at the box office to David Ayer’s A Working Man, an action movie starring Jason Statham. While Jason Statham movies tend to be popular, this is not the type of movie that one would expect to dethrone Snow White, which is based on one of the most iconic animated movies of all time. Disney movies are expected to be box office juggernauts, so Snow White losing out to a film like A Working Man proves that audiences are expecting more from the company.

Furthermore, it is unlikely that Snow White will reclaim the number one spot at the box office. It is basically guaranteed that A Minecraft Movie will reign supreme at the box office this upcoming weekend. Since A Minecraft Movie’s target audience is children and families, it will likely steal people who otherwise may have gone to see Snow White. Therefore, there’s a strong chance that Snow White’s third weekend at the box office will be even more disappointing than its second weekend.

Since it fell harder than expected in its second weekend, Snow White once again underperforming in its third weekend may seal its fate as a box office flop. Clearly, there is declining interest in Disney live-action remakes since not one of them have been able to hold the number one spot at the box office for two weeks straight. Upcoming live-action Disney remakes, such as Lilo & Sтιтch and Moana, may break this disappointing streak. However, as of now, Snow White proves that interest levels in Disney films are not that high.
