Jack Black & Jason Momoa Hype Up A Minecraft Movie’s Glam Rock Inspiration

A Minecraft Movie brings one of the most popular video game worlds of all time to the big screen. The family-friendly adventure from Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre director Jared Hess sees four misfits pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld, a brightly-colored playground where everything is cubic and the only limits are your imagination. Shortly after arriving, the four link up with an expert crafter and find themselves tasked with saving the world they’ve only just discovered.

A Minecraft Movie boasts the star power to match its globally known IP source material, with Jack Black and Jason Momoa serving as the face(s) of the film. Black plays Steve, the knowledgeable crafter who helps the movie’s protagonists find their way, and Momoa portrays washed-up gamer Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison. A number of A Minecraft Movie’s positive early reactions make a point to praise the performances of both actors as being fittingly hilarious and unhinged.

ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan interviewed Jack Black and Jason Momoa about their work leading the A Minecraft Movie cast. Black discussed the most crucial elements of bringing the world of Minecraft to life and reuniting with Nacho Libre director Jared Hess, while Momoa shared the inspiration behind his character. Plus, Momoa shared his thoughts on his DC character switch-up from Aquaman to Lobo.

From the first look at A Minecraft Movie’s Overworld, it became clear that the cubic world of Minecraft was going to be realized in bold, bright color, with the game’s unique aesthetic translated lovingly to the big screen. When asked about the most important element in bringing Minecraft to life, Jack Black was quick to give a shout-out to the movie’s production designer.

“It would be the world,” Black said, “We had Grant Major, who’s an amazing production designer–I worked with him on King Kong–and he basically designed all of the sets and props and all of that magical stuff that makes the Minecraft universe come to life. [So] I’d say Grant Major.”

According to early reports, Jason Moma continues to show his comedic side in A Minecraft Movie through his over-the-top performance of Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison. “All the hair metal bands I grew up with,” Momoa responded when asked about the inspiration behind his performance, “I built a playlist around that. Whitesnake, Skid Row, a little bit of Mötley [Crüe].”

“You’ve got a great needle drop in the movie,” Black interjected, “it’s one of my favorite needle drops.” The song itself, Momoa said, is “I Remember You” by Skid Row. The moment is, in the actor’s words, “The best”. “And you sing along with it,” Black added. Get ready to hear a power ballad, Momoa-style.

“This is the role I’ve always wanted to play,” Momoa shared when asked about his upcoming appearance as Lobo in the upcoming movie Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, “I mean, that’s the comic I love.” Getting your dream role understandably comes with some pressure, though, with the actor adding, “I’m really nervous about it.” Still, “It’s kind of a no-brainer to play this character,” Momoa said.

He also teased the look of the character: “I don’t want to give away too much, but, I mean, we look pretty ᴅᴇᴀᴅ-on–exactly like the character. He’s pretty rough, and the bike’s really cool.” When asked if we’ll see more of Lobo after Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Momoa shared a quick “I hope so. It’s her movie … I just come in for a little bit.”

Jack Black’s film career is full of movies that fans hope to see continued with a sequel. When asked if he’d most like to see a follow-up to Nacho Libre, School of Rock, or something else from his back catalogue, Black shared, “I do anything that I think is a great story. I don’t care if it’s a sequel or a new piece of material … I just love to work with great artists. [If] there’s a great director, a great script, then I will party with that. Don’t make me choose one of my babies.” Fair enough.

A Minecraft Movie will be released in theaters on April 4.
