3 Years Before He Was Suits’ Harvey Specter, Gabriel Macht Starred In A Superhero Movie Alongside Scarlett Johansson & Samuel L. Jackson

American actor Gabriel Macht famously played Harvey Specter in the USA Network TV show Suits, but he deserves some recognition for a movie he made three years before this. Suits is widely known as one of the most popular legal dramas in the U.S.A., its popularity spreading far overseas with the royal ascension of actress Meghan Markle. Created by Aaron Korsh, it brought both humor and romance. Some of Harvey Specter’s best scenes in Suits demonstrate just why he was tapped to play an intriguing role opposite Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson in 2008.

Many of the best Suits episodes rely on Gabriel Macht’s nuanced characterization of the rebel lawyer, Specter. This antihero lawyer used rogue tactics to deploy intelligent strategies in court, charming various love interests and audience members alike. This acting actually builds heavily on Macht’s experience in The Spirit, the surprisingly good superhero movie with Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson. While Macht really broke through in Suits, he cut his teeth on this little-known movie, and it shows, proving that Macht could tackle far more diverse roles in the future.

Gabriel Macht’s The Spirit Was A Comic Book Movie Written And Directed By Frank Miller

The Spirit Has A Unique Appeal

The Spirit is a superhero movie with a difference, and Gabriel Macht plays the lead. Secrets behind the making of The Spirit movie include that Samuel L. Jackson actually wanted even bigger guns for this violent spectacle. Critics targeted the movie’s relative shallowness in favor of style and superficial action plot. Written and directed by Frank Miller and adapted from the comic by Will Eisner, The Spirit could have been everything Sin City was, offering an arthouse aesthetic. Nonetheless, Gabriel Macht was engaging as the central mask-wearer trying to escape various foes.

Despite Its Critical And Commercial Failure, The Spirit Is Worth Watching

Fans Of Sin City May Appreciate The Spirit

The Spirit may well be worth watching for Frank Miller fans, even despite being one of the worst superhero box office bombs. The Spirit has just 14% on Rotten Tomatoes, and even some fans of Sin City derided its frequent descents into superficial visuals without much substance. As Sin City’s mastermind, one may have thought Frank Miller could have followed up the success of his 2005 movie with an even bigger, better noir comic book movie. Unfortunately, Miller dropped the ball on a few aspects of The Spirit. Even so, it entertains well enough, especially for those who love Macht.

As far as bad movies based on comics go, The Spirit is actually not that awful. It suffered box office disappointment as well as a negative reception from critics, but it does have a unique style and a strong lead. Gabriel Macht was clearly juggling many different elements of a complex brief as Denny Colt, otherwise known as the Spirit. Navigating a middling script and gratuitous cleavage, Macht did as well as he could. Those who like the comic book genre when it comes to Hollywood productions should explore The Spirit with that in mind.
