The Chosen Season 5’s Record-Breaking Box Office Explained: How The TV Show Became A Theatrical Success

The faith-based series The Chosen has broken box office records with its season 5 debut, continuing a growing trend of the TV series finding success in theaters. The original series chronicling the life of Jesus Christ has increased in popularity after originally premiering in 2017. This has led to The Chosen season 5 having the most expansive rollout plans. The new season premiered in theaters through a limited-time release before the episodes stream exclusively on Prime Video. The release plan is not entirely new for The Chosen season 5, as earlier seasons and episodes have also been in theaters.

While the majority of The Chosen‘s fanbase is used to watching the previous four seasons and Christmas specials at home, the series has also found success by releasing batches of episodes in theaters. The Chosen season 3 was when the series started prioritizing theatrical releases, as the first two episodes and season finale played on the big screen. With the target audience bringing sustainable box office results, the first two episodes of season 5, known as The Chosen: Last Supper, are now in theaters. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the TV show is once again a box office hit.

The Chosen: Last Supepr – Part 1 had its theatrical debut on March 28, 2025. It was released in over 2000 screens courtesy of Fathom Entertainment. The show quickly reminded the theater industry just how big of a draw it is. The Chosen season 5 made $11.7 million domestically during its opening weekend. That was good enough to finish in third place at the weekend box office, falling only behind A Working Man and Snow White.

The box office performance for The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 1 started off excellently. The two-episode release made $5.1 million in its first day of release. That was the second-highest gross on March 28, 2025, as A Working Man made $5.6 million. The series had a strong hold on Saturday, only dropping 30.3% to make another $3.5 million. Sunday had an even lower drop, 13.5%, helping the show pull in another $3 million on the Sabbath. The Chosen season 5 was in third place at the box office on Saturday and Sunday thanks to those totals.

Currently, there is no reported data for The Chosen season 5’s box office performance on Monday, March 31. The theatrical release is also only domestically, so there is no international box office performance to boost the total further. And yet, The Chosen season 5 set a record for the biggest box office opening for the TV show.

Seasons 3 & 4 Also Found A Lot Of Box Office Success

The $11.7 million box office for The Chosen season 5 is already one of the highest grosses for the series overall. This is notable considering how much more its made than the other episodic releases in the opening weekend alone. The Chosen Season 3: Episodes 1 & 2 had the previous franchise record opening with $8.8 million. The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 1 beat that record by nearly $3 million.

Looking at the overall performance of The Chosen‘s episodes in theaters, season 5’s first two episodes are already the fourth highest-grossing in the series. The Chosen season 4’s first three episodes still hold the record after making $14.8 million worldwide. That was just ahead of The Chosen season 3’s two-episode premiere making $14.6 million. Considering how much The Chosen season 5 has made at the box office in its opening weekend alone, it is on track to be the franchise’s highest earner overall.

When factoring in the various episodes and Christmas specials, The Chosen is now responsible for over $82 million in sales at the box office. That’s a rather impressive total for a limited-time release of a faith-based production.

Why The Chosen Is So Successful At The Box Office Despite Being A TV Show

Faith-Based Movies Have A Strong History Of Success

The Chosen‘s box office success over time is not a total surprise. The series has picked up a large fanbase as the series has continued to unfold. There has been increased interest with each new season, and the rising box office totals reflect that. Furthermore, Amazon’s interest in obtaining exclusive streaming rights to The Chosen season 5 and beyond for the first 90 days of release after theatrical debuts is another example of how much even major Hollywood studios have recognized the opportunities for success with the series.

While The Chosen is not a property with viewership numbers that rival the biggest shows on TV, it is another example of faith-based stories finding success at the box office. There are major examples like Mel Gibson’s The Pᴀssion of the Christ, which was the highest-grossing R-rated movie for a long time. Other faith-based films like God’s Not ᴅᴇᴀᴅ and I Can Only Imagine were big enough box office hits to get sequels too. Even more controversial faith-based films like Sound of Freedom can draw in more viewers than expected.

The Chosen is directly playing to Christian viewers who typically do not have significant releases in theaters that share their beliefs

The reality is that The Chosen is directly playing to Christian viewers who typically do not have significant releases in theaters that share their beliefs. It helps in this case that the property is a hit streaming series with a pᴀssionate following. But it should not be a huge shock to see The Chosen season 5’s box office doing so well considering the franchise’s history in theaters and the long track record of Christian viewers readily going to theaters to see movies (or shows) that connect to the Bible.

What The Chosen Season 5’s Box Office Success Means

The Franchise Has Ambitious Plans For The Future

With a record-breaking launch, there is every reason to believe that future seasons of the show will continue to release episodes in theaters. Seasons 6 and 7 are already confirmed to be on the way, and both should get theatrical releases following The Chosen season 5’s box office success. Fans will have the opportunity to see the rest of season 5 in theaters too. Episodes 3-5 come to theaters on April 3 and episodes 6-8 will be released on April 10. Each of those releases will qualify as their own box office properties.

This also bodes well for The Chosen‘s larger franchise plans. There are multiple spinoffs and additional projects in development to expand the narrative. While not every one may get a theatrical debut, the bigger projects – shows based on Joseph and Moses – should have the marketability to receive theatrical releases. They could then continue the strong track record for The Chosen as a cinematic experience.

There’s also a chance that The Chosen seasons 5’s box office will encourage more faith-based productions to get theatrical releases. This could come in a variety of forms. While some of the bigger studios may not develop faith-based projects internally, other distributors could continue picking them up to try and be part of the next big box office phenomenon from Christian media.
