Black Bag VOD Release Date Revealed For Michael Fᴀssbender’s 96% RT Spy Thriller

The VOD release date has been revealed for Black Bag. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, this 2025 spy movie is about an intelligence agent who suspects his own wife might be betraying their agency and, by extension, their country. Black Bag‘s leading cast includes Michael Fᴀssbender, Cate Blanchett, Gustaf Skarsgård, Marisa Abela, Naomie Harris, Regé-Jean Page, and Tom Burke. It is the second Soderbergh movie to come out in fairly rapid succession, with the first being last year’s Presence.

As per Universal, the VOD release date has been revealed for Black Bag. The movie will be available to own or rent on digital starting tomorrow, April 1, 2025. This digital release date will be followed by a 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD release coming on May 13, 2025. As of now, no streaming release date has been revealed.

What This Means For Black Bag

The Movie Could Make A Digital Comeback

Black Bag was originally released in theaters on March 14, 2025. This means that the movie will have only been given three full weekends in theaters before being available to watch at home. While at first this might seem like a fairly limited window, Black Bag did have an decent performance in theaters during its run. The movie opened at no. 2 during its first weekend, and at the time of writing, has made over $31 million worldwide. While this means it failed to recoup its estimated $50 million budget, it isn’t a terrible showing for a March release.

The Fᴀssbender-led film also has the potential to make a resurgence with at-home viewers. Black Bag received fantastic reviews, getting a 96% Tomatometer among critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 70% Popcornmeter. One of the movie’s fans was ScreenRant‘s Mae Abdulbaki, who gave the film 8 out of 10 stars, writing “the suspense builds and builds until it combusts, and the result brings us to an immensely satisfying full-circle moment that complements the beginning.” Given this positive reception, audiences might be convinced to catch Black Bag digitally even if they missed it in theaters.

Our Take On The Black Bag Digital Release Date

Bowing Out Of Theatrical Exclusivity Is Likely The Right Move

Between Opus, Death of a Unicorn, and Novocaine, there have been a fair number of surprising underperformances in March. As such, it makes a lot of sense for Black Bag to quit while it’s ahead, taking its $31 million March release as a win and bowing out of theatrical exclusivity early. With the movie falling out of the top five this past weekend, it would be unlikely to meet many other major milestones if it stayed in theaters without the VOD release, and will hopefully be able to amᴀss some more funds from rental sales.
