Jason Momoa Confirms Dune 3 Return

Jason Momoa confirms his return for Dune: Part Three, revealing he will be coming back as Duncan Idaho in the forthcoming sci-fi sequel. Dune: Part Three has been confirmed, with the new installment being written and directed by Denis Villeneuve, who wrote and directed the previous two movies. The upcoming sequel will be based on Frank Herbert’s second book in the series, Dune Messiah, following Emperor Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) after the events of the holy war he wages across the known universe. Other familiar faces are also expected to come back.

Speaking with Today about his upcoming role in A Minecraft Movie, Momoa directly confirmed that he will be coming back in Dune: Part Three, confirming he’s “making a comeback” in the next film. This means the actor will be reprising his role as Duncan Idaho, the House Atreides swordmaster who had a close friendship with Paul when he was younger. Check out what the actor said below:

I’m making a comeback. You heard it first, right here with you, baby.

What Momoa’s Return Means For Dune: Part Three

How Will Duncan Idaho Return?

Duncan was a good friend of Paul’s who had a different perspective on the Fremen than others, having lived with them for quite some time before the events of the movies. He was one of the few survivors when House Harkonnen and Emperor Shaddam (Christopher Walken) betrayed House Atreides, killing Leto (Oscar Isaac) on Arrakis. While he kept Paul and his mother, Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), as safe as he could, he eventually died at the end of Dune, succumbing to injuries from Sardaukar soldiers while the pair escaped.

However, Momoa’s confirmation of his return indicates Duncan’s story is far from over, having a relevant role to play going into the next chapter of Paul’s life. Dune Messiah lays the groundwork for how Momoa can return, with the actor possibly appearing in more than just flashbacks depending on how accurate the adaptation is. Since many characters in Dune have various fates across the series, it makes sense for the actor to be coming back, especially because of the creative way he springs up in the story after the first book.

Frank Herbert’s original Dune series consisted of six books, with Dune Messiah being the second.

Although there’s no word yet on how big a role Momoa will play in Dune: Part Three, his return lines up with the books, where Duncan is brought back in an interesting way. As for his role in the story, it’s unclear how similar it will be, as some changes could be made to him, much like elements of Dune: Part Two were altered from the source material. Even so, his inclusion is an exciting development that makes the sequel all the more promising.
