Viola Davis Reveals She Would “Absolutely” Join The MCU: “My Daughter Is A Marvel Fanatic”

EGOT-winning actor and DC star Viola Davis voices her interest in joining the MCU. Viola Davis made her superhero movie debut as Task Force X’s boss Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad, reprised her role in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad soft reboot, and survived the DCU reboot to lead Task Force M in Creature Commandos and receive her own solo series — the DCU’s upcoming Waller show. Viola Davis may have many more DCU appearances in store, but a Marvel role isn’t off the table.

Speaking to EW on the red carpet for her movie G20, Viola Davis reveals she has watched almost every MCU release multiple times due to her daughter’s love for the franchise, and confesses she’s interested in playing a Marvel character. Davis jokes she’d like to play “an Iron Man” or “maybe Iron Mania?” Read Viola Davis’ full response below:

“Yeah, absolutely. I don’t know what hero I would be, you know. I just, my daughter is a Marvel fanatic, so I’ve watched, I think almost all of them five, six times.”(…) “Probably an Iron Man. I would be — maybe Iron Mania? Iron Shaniqua Mania?”

What Viola Davis’ Marvel Role Comments Mean

Viola Davis Would Be A Great Addition To The MCU

Viola Davis as Amanda Waller with the Green Lanterns and Justice League International in DC Comics

Viola Davis has built an exceptional career over more than thirty years’ worth of outstanding performances. Davis is the eighteenth person to achieve EGOT status — the collection of an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. If Viola Davis truly wants to join the MCU, there’s no doubt Marvel Studios would find her a role that suits her. Big stars like Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Kurt Russell, and Angelina Jolie have played one-off yet significant roles in the MCU, and others like Samuel L. Jackson and Anthony Hopkins have reprised their MCU roles multiple times.

Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller seems to be a central character in the DCU’s Gods and Monsters chapter. However, that probably wouldn’t disqualify her from an MCU role. Chukwudi Iwuji played the High Evolutionary in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Clemson Murn in Peacemaker season 1; David Harbour plays Red Guardian in Black Widow and Thunderbolts*, and Eric Frankenstein in Creature Commandos; and Frank Grillo played Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, and Rick Flag Jr. in Creature Commandos and Superman — among other actors who’ve appeared in Marvel and DC projects.

Our Take On Viola Davis’ Marvel Role Comments

Marvel Can Get Creative With Viola Davis’ MCU Role

The Marvel Cinemaic Universe is already a densely populated franchise, and many of the roles Viola Davis would crush are already cast. Davis’ Marvel character would also need to differ from Amanda Waller, who has a very well-defined personality and influence on the DCU. Curiously, Angela Bᴀssett played Amanda Waller in 2011’s Green Lantern years before her Academy Award-nominated performance as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Viola Davis’ imposing performance in The Woman King makes her a good candidate for a role in Black Panther 3, potentially alongside her Fences co-star Denzel Washington.
