Brad Pitt & David Ayer’s Action-Adventure Reunion Movie Gets Major Filming Update From Director

Director David Ayer has revealed a major update concerning the movie that will reunite him with Brad Pitt. Ayer, a former submariner for the U.S. Navy, spent time serving in the military, along with his own family’s service history, which has helped inform a number of his movie projects over the years. One such project was the 2014 war film Fury, which saw Pitt ᴀssume the role of a US tank commander fighting in Germany during the final weeks of World War II.

Earning largely favorable reviews and generating a healthy worldwide box-office of $211.8 million against an original budget of $68 million, Fury remains one of the highest-rated movies in Ayer’s filmmaking career. Featuring an all-star lineup, which also included the likes of Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peña, and Jon Bernthal, Fury would also go on to win the National Board of Review Award for Best Ensemble Cast.

Ayer Is Set To Reunite With Brad Pitt For A Classic Adventure Movie

The Director Promises A Return To Old-School Sensibilities

While more recent years have seen Ayer forge a successful working relationship with The Beekeeper’s Jason Statham, it was previously revealed that he would not be returning to helm the action-heavy sequel. Instead, the in-development Beekeeper 2 will instead see the reins handed over to Indonesian director Timo Tjahjanto (The Night Comes For Us). Meanwhile, Ayer will be otherwise preoccupied with Heart of the Beast, a survival thriller that will see Pitt portray a former special forces soldier who is trapped in the Alaskan wilderness with his retired combat dog.

Speaking with Collider, Ayer offered an update on Heart of the Beast, revealing that filming on the project is about to begin shortly. The director also went on to describe his next movie as a “classic old-school adventure movie,” harking back to many of the cinematic traditions of yesteryear. Check out his comments below:

We’re going to camera shortly. I’m about to get back to Brad with another collaboration. All I can say is it’s just going to be a classic old-school adventure movie. This is what Hollywood excelled at for decades, and I want to bring that cinematic tradition back and just adventure storytelling.

What Ayer’s Comments Mean For Heart Of The Beast

The Beekeeper Director Has Proven Himself Adept At Using Older Movie Traditions

While fans of Ayer’s work may be excited about his forthcoming reunion with Pitt, these most recent comments would suggest that audiences will be in for a very different kind of viewing experience compared to Fury. Swapping out a large, ensemble cast for what is likely to be a largely single-handed performance from Pitt, Ayer’s promise of an “old-school” adventure film is a vast departure from the gritty, war-torn approach to their previous collaboration.

Nonetheless, Ayer has proven himself quite adept at tapping into many of the cinematic tropes and traditions of older-style action movies, an approach that was responsible for much of The Beekeeper’s monumental success. Whether he can seek to generate a similar level of enthusiasm for Heart of the Beast remains to be seen, but between the movie’s simple premise and Ayer’s affection for the cinematic traditions of years gone by, it is possible that it could prove to be another successful team-up between himself and Pitt.
