Nicole Kidman’s New Thriller Movie Is A Good Reminder To Watch Her Overlooked 84% RT Horror From 24 Years Ago

Holland is the newest addition to Nicole Kidman’s impressive filmography, and it serves as the perfect reminder of a 2001 role that has never gotten the level of attention that it deserved. Holland stars Nicole Kidman as Nancy Vandergroot, a Stepford Wives-esque suburban woman who is devoted to her family and her role as a teacher. However, Nancy begins to suspect that her husband’s frequent business trips may actually mean that he is cheating on her, and she sets out to catch him with the help of her fellow teacher, Dave (Gael Garcia Bernal).

While the movie might initially seem straightforward enough, Holland has a few twists and turns up its sleeve that will keep audiences hooked. Following its debut, Holland received a mediocre Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics divided about the film’s plot twists and pacing. Though the movie has certainly received criticism, the one thing that has been almost universally acknowledged, including in Screen Rant‘s review of Holland, is Kidman’s consistent talent across a variety of roles. This notion is certainly true of her 2001 horror film as well.

The Others Is A Much Stronger Nicole Kidman Horror Movie To Watch After Holland

The Others Is A Great Gothic Horror

While Kidman’s performance has been praised as the best aspect of Holland, her performance in 2001’s The Others is one of the best roles of Nicole Kidman’s career. Kidman has appeared in various psychological thrillers and horror movies throughout her career, but The Others stands out as one of her best performances and a great movie overall. Kidman herself has stated that The Others has been overlooked, and it is something she would like to revisit. Her portrayal of Grace Stewart is incredibly complex and tense, containing both subtleties and extreme reactions.

The Others perfectly layers one disturbing event onto another.

Grace lives in a large isolated house in Jersey with her two children, until three new people arrive looking for jobs. After agreeing to hire them for various domestic roles, Grace begins to notice disturbances around the house and her children begin to believe that they are being haunted. Though Kidman’s Grace initially refuses to believe that ghosts could be real, as things become increasingly eerie, she too begins to lose her grip on what is and isn’t real in their isolated home. The Others perfectly layers one disturbing event onto another.

The Movie As A Whole And Kidman’s Performance In Particular Received Praise

While it may be underrated 24 years later, The Others was certainly successful at the time of its release. In fact, The Others was the highest-grossing Spanish-produced film of all time when it was released and remains in the top 10 today. The movie ultimately grossed $210 million on a budget of just $17 million, proving that it was profitable at the time as well as critically well-received. The Others is Nicole Kidman’s ninth highest-grossing film, a list that includes superhero blockbusters and other box office hits.

The Others‘ financial success was also bolstered by its critical reception. In line with its impressive 84% Rotten Tomatoes score, The Others received praise for Kidman’s performance, the movie’s eerie tone and suspenseful pacing, and great direction. The movie won numerous Goya Awards, and Kidman was nominated for Best Actress at both the BAFTAs and the Golden Globes. Though Holland is certainly an entertaining glimpse into what Nicole Kidman can do in a thriller, The Others is a much better portrayal of her talent.
