Superman‘s Hawkgirl actress has expressed how much fun she had while filming the upcoming DCU movie, although she has yet to see it. With a July 11 release date, time is running short for Superman’s main cast to get a sneak peek at the DCU’s inaugural movie. Whether this privilege will be afforded to Isabela Merced remains to be seen, as while she can be seen in some high-octane sH๏τs in the Superman trailer, the full extent of her role is to be determined.
In terms of further information, Isabela Merced has little to offer, though she did state in an exclusive interview with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan while promoting The Last of Us season 2 (which is due to premier on HBO and Max April 13) that she had fun making it. Merced was responding to the question of what most excites her about director James Gunn’s vision for the movie, stating that she was “clueless” due to having not yet seen it. She also stressed that she would love to see it soon. Her full comments can be viewed below:
Ash Crossan: Superman is just a few months away. What excites you most about James Gunn’s vision for the film and your character?
Isabela Merced: I have not seen it yet! I would love to at some point, that would be great. But I’m just, I really don’t know what to say, because I don’t know! I was there and I did it, but I had fun! I’m just as clueless as you.
What Isabela Merced’s Comments Mean For Superman
Merced’s Lack Of Insights Might Indicate A Diminished Role
Unfortunately, Isabela Merced’s comments do not shed much light on what we can expect from Superman beyond what the trailer reveals. The fact that Merced had fun while filming is certainly a positive sign and reflects the fact that Superman looks to be a lot brighter and more lighthearted than its famously darker-toned DCEU predecessor. Nevertheless, Merced’s lack of further insights when it comes to Hawkgirl’s characterization and James Gunn’s vision could suggest a minimal role.
Hawkgirl can be seen soaring through the sky with her iconic mace in the Superman trailer and appears alongside some other lesser-known heroes like Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern and Mister Terrific. The larger cast in Superman might work to diminish Hawkgirl’s role, though it remains plausible that Merced will reprise it down the line. Merced’s lack of insights into Gunn’s greater vision hints that she was not on-set for long, though short of further confirmation, this is purely up for speculation.
Our Take On Isabela Merced’s Superman Comments
Merced May Be Willfully Keeping Quiet
There is an alternative take on Isabela Merced’s comments, or lack thereof, regarding James Gunn’s vision for Superman. Namely, she wishes to avoid influencing what fans should be expecting from the DCU’s flagship movie, especially as so much is riding on its success. This could be requested by DC Studios itself or of her own volition, but I understand if Merced – who is unlikely to play a particularly large role in the movie – wishes to avoid treading on the toes of other Superman filmmakers and wait until she has seen the movie to make such calls.
