John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place Will Join A Very Elite Group Of Horror Franchises After The Third Movie Comes Out

Although the A Quiet Place series hasn’t quite made enough money to join one exclusive genre club, A Quiet Place 3 is almost certain to push the series over the line. The A Quiet Place timeline is a little complicated, even for a horror franchise. 2018’s original sleeper hit takes place after the franchise’s sound-sensitive monsters have wiped out much of the world’s population, beginning with the off-screen death of the central couple’s young child at the claws of these aliens.

A Quiet Place then skips ahead a few years, only for its sequel, A Quiet Place Part II, to fill in the gaps by depicting the initial arrival of these aliens. A Quiet Place Part II’s scariest sequence depicts the aliens indiscriminately destroying the protagonist’s hometown before the rest of the sequel’s story skips ahead to after A Quiet Place‘s ending. To make matters more complicated, 2024’s prequel A Quiet Place: Day One happens after A Quiet Place Part II’s attack scene, but before the rest of the series.

A Quiet Place Will Most Likely Be A Billion Dollar Franchise After A Quiet Place 3

A Quiet Place 3 Is Likely To Make The Series Even More Lucrative

While its timeline might be a little complex, that clearly has not put viewers off the A Quiet Place movies. A Quiet Place’s original monster design and memorable premise made the movie a huge hit upon release, with director John Krasinski’s movie earning over $340 million on a budget of only $17 million. Krasinski returned to direct 2021’s A Quiet Place Part II, whose many release date delays did not stop the movie from earning a whopping $297 million upon release.

A Quiet Place: Day One made $261 million upon release, bringing the franchise’s total box office to over $898 million.

This payday may have been even bigger if the sequel had not been released during the COVID-19 pandemic, judging by A Quiet Place: Day One’s 2024 box office success. Directed by Pig’s Michael Sarnoski, the prequel made $261 million upon release, bringing the franchise’s total box office to over $898 million. As such, A Quiet Place 3 will almost certainly make the series a billion-dollar franchise, despite how rare this achievement has historically proven in the horror genre.

Only Five Horror Franchises Have Grossed Over A Billion At The Box Office

Vanishingly Few Horror Movie Series Managed This Feat

Believe it or not, A Quiet Place crossing the threshold and becoming a billion-dollar franchise would make the series only the sixth horror franchise to achieve this feat. A look at the list of highest-grossing horror movies of all time proves that, although there are plenty of one-off successes like I Am Legend and World War Z, billion-dollar horror franchises are vanishingly hard to come by throughout cinema history. The Conjuring Universe is the most successful to date, with over $2.2 billion in box office receipts.

Highest Grossing Horror Movie Franchises Of All Time

Series

Box Office Total

The Conjuring

$2,280,642,532

Alien

$1,995,347,220

Resident Evil

$1,284,423,262

It

$1,175,874,976

Saw

$1,141,842,812

Although the upcoming I Am Legend 2 could see that post-apocalyptic series join the pantheon of billion-dollar horror franchises, the A Quiet Place movies wouldn’t be the first series in the post-apocalyptic horror sub-genre to enter the rarefied club. The Resident Evil movies made a total of $1.28 billion between them, although it is worth noting that there are six movies in the series compared to A Quiet Place’s three outings. The It movies managed to earn over $1.17 billion with only two outings to their name.

The Scream series, the Halloween movies, and even the Final Destination franchise all fell short of the one-billion mark, proving just how impressive the A Quiet Place franchise’s achievement is.

2017’s It still holds its place as the most successful single horror movie of all time as of March 2025, but the Alien movies are the second-most lucrative horror franchise with $1.99 billion at the box office. Although the Saw movies also crossed the one-billion threshold, none of their slasher compeтιтors can boast this achievement. The Scream series, the Halloween movies, and even the Final Destination franchise all fell short of the one-billion mark, proving just how impressive the A Quiet Place franchise’s achievement is.

Why The Quiet Place Franchise Has Done So Well Critically And Commercially

The Quiet Place Series Merges Action Drama and Horror Effectively

Compared to some of the series that made over a billion, such as the divisive Saw movies and the inconsistent Alien franchise, the A Quiet Place movies are notable for their critical success as well as their commercial appeal. It is rare for a horror sequel like A Quiet Place Part II to match the success of its predecessor, and even rarer to see a prequel like A Quiet Place: Day One impress critics. According to reviewers, the secret of the series seems to be its unique blend of tension, scares, drama, and action.

2018’s original A Quiet Place is almost unbearably tense, with Krasinski milking the premise for all it is worth. A Quiet Place wisely expanded on the original movie’s story, fleshing out the world of the series and sacrificing some scare factor for more character development. Meanwhile, A Quiet Place: Part One managed to up the action quotient of the series considerably while still finding time to humanize its heroes. The A Quiet Place movies never reduce their protagonists to simplistic stock characters, something that ensures A Quiet Place 3 will likely be another big hit.
