Simu Liu Is First Avengers: Doomsday Cast Member To React To Announcement

Marvel Cinematic Universe star Simu Liu becomes the first Avengers: Doomsday cast member to react to the announcement of his return for the team-up movie. The Multiverse Saga is getting closer to its end, and Marvel Studios is announcing the full Avengers: Doomsday cast. As Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is set to take on the MCU multiverse, the franchise will bring established and new heroes together, making it the biggest team-up to date.

Marvel Studios is currently running through a creative announcement for their Avengers: Doomsday cast, as multiple actors are being revealed to be coming back for the film, which is now in production. Simu Liu – who plays Shang-Chi – took to X to respond to the announcement that his character will be in the Phase 6 installment. Check out his reaction below:

Liu’s post says he “*pokes head out of karaoke booth*”, a callback to the end of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, where he and Katy were last seen together. This will be the second MCU movie for Liu, while he has previously voiced Shang-Chi through What If…? and is set to appear in Marvel Zombies this fall.

What Simu Liu’s Avengers: Doomsday Casting Announcement Response Means

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings released five years ago, meaning it’s been quite some time since we saw Shang-Chi in live-action. Still, Liu’s solo film was one of the more well-received installments in Phase 4 and in The Multiverse Saga as a whole. That is why many fans have been wanting updates on Shang-Chi 2 and the character’s overall future in the MCU timeline. Even if Liu’s response was brief, his comment is clearly also a sigh of relief that he can finally talk about coming back to the MCU as part of Avengers: Doomsday.

Shang-Chi‘s ending suggested the character has strong ties to the multiverse; apparently his use of the Ten Rings sent a beacon across the dimensions. This had originally seemed to connect to Kang the Conqueror – some aspects of the power signature were reminiscent of Kang’s in Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania – but Marvel pivoted after the decision to move away from Kang. It remains to be seen how Marvel will tie Shang-Chi in once again, but Liu’s return in the Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement is certainly promising.

After having followed Liu’s many interviews about what is next for Shang-Chi in the MCU, it will be fun to see how he fits in with the other characters, from all the established Avengers to some of his fellow newcomers. In terms of how they will execute these characters coming together in the Avengers: Doomsday story remains to be seen, as Marvel Studios is still keeping plot details under wrap. But for now, the MCU audience can look forward to catching Liu’s Shang-Chi in Avengers: Doomsday in 2026.
