Moana Is Now A Demigod & It Has 5 Big Implications For Moana 3 & The Future Of Disney’s Franchise

Moana becomes an actual demigod in Moana 2, and while this reveal is cool, it has five major implications on the franchise that future installments will have to deal with. Although demigods have always existed in the world of Moana, the stories previouly focused on a human, with Moana being what grounds the wacky world of Maui and the other Moana mythical characters. However, Moana’s demigod transformation in Moana 2 has changed everything, meaning that Moana 3 and future franchise projects will never be able to go back to what was.

At the end of Moana 2, Moana is prepared to sacrafice herself in order to save the island of Motufetu. While diving into the ocean to touch it, Moana is struck by Nalo’s lightning, nearly dying. However, Maui is able to save her using his powers. When Moana comes back, she discovers that she has been turned into a demigod. Blessed with new wayfinding powers, Moana is finally able to unite the islands using these gifts. While Moana 3 hasn’t been confirmed, a potential sequel will have to deal with the aftermath of this Moana change.

Moana Won’t Age In Moana 3 (Or Future Movies)

Now That She Is Immortal

While Moana’s demigod status is cool, it has a lot of implications that Moana 2 didn’t touch on. One of the biggest has to do with how Moana will age. In the world of Moana, it seems that demigods don’t age at all. Maui has looked the same for thousands of years, so while he is technically older, he doesn’t change. It is likely that Moana will deal with the same aging changes. Since Moana aged between the first and second movie, it’ll be strange for her to stay the same age in Moana 3, even as her little sister continues to grow.

In order to avoid this problem, Moana 3 could reveal that immortality is a power that only Maui has. However, immortality is something that is typically ᴀssociated with demigods in every type of story, meaning this would be a strange choice for Moana 3 to make.

Moana 3 Can’t Repeat Moana’s Near-Death Experience

Due To Her New Powers

Another problem that comes with Moana 2‘s demigod reveal is that future movies can’t repeat Moana’s near death experience. When she jumped into the water to touch Motufetu, Moana knew she was sacrificing herself. Now that Moana is an immortal demigod, the stakes won’t be as high in future Moana stories, as she can’t die. It is possible that Moana stories could find a way to create dangerous situations that work in spite of Moana’s powers, but her new demigod status gives her a lot of plot armor.

A Live-Action Moana 2 Would Struggle To Repeat The Demigod Twist

Due To The Immortality

The Moana franchise will be moving forward with a live-action branch, as a live-action Moana remake is set to release soon. If this live-action Moana is a success, live-action adaptations of future Moana movies are definitely possible, giving new takes on the sequels’ stories. However, if Moana doesn’t age in the animated films thanks to her demigod status, it will be hard to recreate this twist in the live-action Moana movies.

Since there will be several years between each live-action Moana movie, the actors in the film will obviously age. This will make it difficult to have demigod immortality be part of the story, creating an issue with the live-action series.

Moana 3 May Be Able To Kill Off Maui

Since Moana Could Replace Him

There was a lot of speculation that Maui was going to die in Moana 2, and although he lost his demigod powers for a brief moment, he surprisingly wasn’t killed off. Maui’s continued involvement in Moana most likely has to do with his demigod status, with him acting as the main link between the human world and the realm of gods. Now that Moana herself is a demigod, however, she can fill Maui’s role. This makes Maui a bit more expendable in Moana 3 and beyond, meaning that the chances of him dying or being written out are much higher.

Moana 3 Will Have To Further Explore The World Of Gods

Based On The Post-Credits Scene

Although the world of gods has always been important to Moana, Moana 3 will have to push this aspect even further. Moana’s demigod status means that she will now be able to bridge the world of humans and gods, meaning that the next sequel could see her interact with mythical beings a lot more. On top of that, Moana 2‘s post-credits scene already set up the return of Nalo and Matangi, meaning that Moana will be having a lot more godly trouble in Moana 3.
