Musician SZA Reveals Her MCU Dream Role Is An Iconic X-Men Hero

Ahead of the MCU X-Men’s debut, musician SZA confesses she’d love to play a new live-action version of Storm in a Marvel project. Storm has appeared in six X-Men movies so far — seven counting her ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2 cameo. Halle Berry played Ororo Munroe in Fox’s first X-Men trilogy and X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Alexandra Shipp succeeded Berry, playing a younger version of Storm in X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Since then, it has been six years without a live-action Storm appearance, though the hero is a key character in X-Men ’97 seasons 1 and 2, as well as What If…? season 3.

In an episode of the Jennifer Hudson Show, SZA reveals that she would love to play a superhero, as she “grew up being into Marvel and DC.” SZA first says she’d like to play the Silver Surfer, but then puts forward the idea of playing X-Men’s Ororo Munroe a.k.a. Storm. Particularly, SZA says she’s interested in exploring Storm’s unique origin story if she ever gets the chance to play the weather-manipulating hero in a Marvel project. Read SZA’s comments below:

“I was thinking, you know, how Storm has an origin story, like, she comes from like this whole other place where it’s like, the jungle… I think that would be so gnarly if I could be Storm’s origin story. That’d be so cool. I’d love to bring the rain”

Aside from her popularity, SZA’s love for the character and the source material opens the door for a potential casting as the MCU’s Storm. SZA also possesses physical similarities to Ororo Munroe’s traditional physical appearance from the comics, which many fan-cast actresses and celebrities often lack — namely, her voluminous hair. SZA is only beginning to create an acting portfolio with her co-starring role in One Of Them Days, but her interest in film also supports the idea of a superhero role in a Marvel movie or show.

Oddly enough, Storm’s origin story was barely touched upon in Fox’s X-Men movie franchise. Storm’s Kenyan heritage, her tribe, her time in Cairo, and her first encounter with Charles Xavier were all overlooked by Fox’s X-Men movies. In fact, Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp’s Storm portrayals both lacked the character’s Kenyan accent. SZA’s comments are a bit inaccurate, though, as Storm wasn’t born in a “jungle”. Ororo Munroe was born in the Great Rift Valley in Kenya, which is notable for its diverse ecosystems and geographical features, including lakes, plains, mountains, and even volcanoes — all of which provide rich narrative and audiovisual material for a Marvel movie.

SZA Could Be An Inspiring Casting Choice For The MCU’s Storm

While Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp did a good job playing Storm in Fox’s X-Men films, there’s still plenty of room for improvement. A wildly different casting approach could be the first step to introducing a brand-new Storm in live-action, especially considering the MCU’s X-Men movies and shows will differ greatly from Fox’s franchise, starting with their interconnectivity with the rest of the cinematic universe. SZA’s love for the character makes her a candidate worthy of consideration.
