Forget Peter Parker, This Other Spider-Man Character Needs To Appear In Daredevil: Born Again (And The MCU’s Been Setting It Up For 6 Years)

Considering that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is highly unlikely to appear in Daredevil: Born Again, a different Spider-Man character would be an even better addition to Matt Murdock’s solo MCU show. Daredevil: Born Again intensifies the tension between vigilantes and the authorities, with Wilson Fisk’s rise to power threatening all masked heroes’ lives. A mystery character killed White Tiger right after Hector Ayala was formally acquitted, and Wilson Fisk made an ill-fated agreement with Matt Murdock not to step on each other’s toes.

Daredevil: Born Again suggests a city-wide vigilante rebellion is inevitable, and several other well-known street-level heroes might accompany Daredevil in his eventual confrontation with the former Kingpin. One of the most logical choices for Daredevil’s closest masked ally is Spider-Man. Unfortunately, Marvel isn’t legally allowed to use Spider-Man in a live-action series, meaning that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker probably won’t appear in Daredevil: Born Again seasons 1 or 2. Besides Spider-Man, however, there’s one character who would fit Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk’s story superbly.

J. Jonah Jameson Would Be A Perfect Addition To Daredevil: Born Again

J. Jonah Jameson Started His Own War Against Vigilantes Before Wilson Fisk

J.K. Simmons' J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 and the MCU's Spider-Man Far From Home

Spider-Man: Far From Home‘s post-credits scene revealed that J. Jonah Jameson had his own in-universe The Daily Bugle show, where he launched a smear campaign against Spider-Man after Mysterio’s death. Presumably, Jameson criticized other masked vigilantes before Mysterio’s video surfaced. Daredevil, the Punisher, the Defenders, and White Tiger may be a recurring subject of J. Jonah Jameson’s discussions on his The Daily Bugle show before and during the events of Daredevil: Born Again — only off-screen. J. Jonah Jameson’s feud with New York vigilantes has never been more relevant.

Leaving J. Jonah Jameson out of Daredevil: Born Again at the height of New York’s vigilante crisis would be a disservice to J.K. Simmons’ iconic character. J.K. Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson has been one of the most inspired casting choices in superhero movie history, and it precedes the MCU Spider-Man and Daredevil’s introduction by over a decade. Back in 2002, it would have seemed like an unlikely fantasy to see Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson lambaste other superheroes on screen. Simmons’ Jameson has been an official part of the MCU since 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, so this scenario is technically possible.

J. Jonah Jameson Could Be Wilson Fisk’s Biggest Ally

Daredevil: Born Again Could Be J. Jonah Jameson’s Time To Shine In The MCU

In an interconnected franchise like the MCU, every character has the opportunity to grow beyond their original тιтle. J. Jonah Jameson has always been tied to Spider-Man, but he has a lot of untapped potential as a minor antagonist in other heroes’ stories, notably Daredevil and other street-level NYC characters. In Daredevil: Born Again, J. Jonah Jameson could be Wilson Fisk’s best ᴀsset in his war against vigilantism. Neither Fisk nor Jameson himself remember it thanks to Doctor Strange, but Jameson’s Daily Bugle platform is so influential that it ruined one hero’s entire life.

It’s a little odd that Wilson Fisk didn’t go straight to J. Jonah Jameson when searching for a journalist that supports his views

Although creating a stable professional relationship with Ben Urich’s journalist niece may be part of his villainous masterplan in Daredevil: Born Again, it’s a little odd that Wilson Fisk didn’t go straight to J. Jonah Jameson when searching for a journalist that supports his views. Even after Doctor Strange’s final spell, Jameson called Spider-Man a coward for being a masked vigilante. When Matt Murdock takes up the cowl and costume again and other New York heroes join forces to oppose Mayor Fisk, an alliance between Fisk and Jameson could be ᴅᴇᴀᴅly for the city’s vigilantes.

Sadly, J. Jonah Jameson Can’t Appear In Daredevil: Born Again Either

J.K. Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson would be a great addition to Daredevil: Born Again in place of Spider-Man. Unfortunately, Marvel and Sony’s agreement applies to all characters closely connected to Spider-Man, not only to Peter Parker. It’s just as difficult for J. Jonah Jameson, MJ, Ned Leeds, Aunt May, Betty Brant and Flash Thompson to appear in a live-action MCU series as it is for Peter Parker. J.K. Simmons was playing J. Jonah Jameson before the MCU existed. Bringing him into a different hero’s solo тιтle is not as simple as it sounds.

So, with Spider-Man and J. Jonah Jameson unavailable for Daredevil: Born Again, it makes more sense for Daredevil and Kingpin to appear in Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man 4, where there are no limitations as to which characters can share the screen. Spider-Man’s reaction to Wilson Fisk’s war against vigilantes is essential, even if Daredevil: Born Again‘s main conflict ends before the events of Spider-Man 4 begin. Likewise, there must be a lot of commentary from J. Jonah Jameson that the MCU is leaving off-screen, and Spider-Man 4 is the perfect place to show it.
