Live-Action Invincible Movie: Confirmation & Everything We Know

A live-action Invincible movie is coming from Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and creator of the original comics, Robert Kirkman. Invincible was first published in 2003 before being adapted into an incredibly successful 2021 TV series on Amazon Prime Video. While the show has helped introduce Mark Grayson, the hero also known as Invincible, to a wide audience, the live-action movie was actually confirmed several years prior in 2017.

While development on the project has taken its time, the arrival of the animated series has only served to increase interest in the live-action Invincible movie. There aren’t many known details yet — such as whether J.K. Simmons will be reprising his role as Omni-Man in live-action — but regular updates from Robert Kirkman have kept eager audiences ᴀssured that the Invincible movie is still on its way. Though it might not happen for quite some time, it’s almost guaranteed that Invincible will make its live-action debut eventually.

Robert Kirkman Offers An Update

With years pᴀssing between pieces of news regarding the project, the latest update comes from Robert Kirkman as he discusses the live-action Invincible movie. The comic and TV creator has been very candid throughout the entire development process, but his latest quotes aren’t the most encouraging. “Unfortunately, there’s not much I can say,” said Kirkman, before explaining how the animated series is both a blessing and a curse when it comes to making a live-action movie. The creator was otherwise terse with his response concerning the movie, though he did leave with a glimmer of hope.

Read Kirkman’s quote here:

Unfortunately, there’s not much I can say. I will say that the television show makes it vastly easier and vastly more difficult in various different aspects of the development of the movie. That’s kind of where I have to leave it, unfortunately. It’s still early going.

I would be shocked if it doesn’t happen one day.

Kirkman’s reticence to say anything specific about the project is understandable, especially as every tidbit of information is often blown up into something much bigger than it actually is. Producing an animated TV series isn’t an easy feat, and crafting the perfect adaptation likely takes all of his creative attention. On top of that, the series is recontextualizing the franchise with each new season, making adapting things into a feature film challenging.

Amazon Prime Video’s Invincible animated series has aired three seasons thus far and has been renewed through season 4.

Will Any Of The Stars From The Animated Series Return?

Other cast members like J.K. Simmons are less certain, and the chances of the animated series’ stars playing their original roles are slim.

At this juncture, no cast members have been announced for the long-awaited Invincible live-action movie, and it is perhaps the biggest source of speculation. Robert Kirkman’s tongue-in-cheek suggestion that Steven Yeun could play the dastardly Cecil Stedman may have been a joke, but the Walking ᴅᴇᴀᴅ alum could nevertheless factor into the live-action movie. Other cast members like J.K. Simmons are less certain, and the chances of the animated series’ stars playing their original roles are slim.

What Is The Live-Action Invincible Movie About?

Mark flies through the city in Invincible

Robert Kirkman hasn’t revealed any details about the plot of the live-action Invincible movie yet. It’s not even clear if the film will be a straight retelling of the Invincible story in a new live-action medium, or if it will tell an original narrative that connects to the Invincible TV show. Kirkman’s comments so far have teased that the live-action Invincible movie won’t exist in a vacuum and will build off the show somehow.

However, until either he, Seth Rogen, or Evan Goldberg provide some clarity, it’s unclear how connected they’ll be. Given that Invincible season 2 is set to dabble in the multiverse, the live-action movie may be a retelling of Mark’s story from the first season in an alternate, non-animated universe.
