Robert Pattinson Sci-Fi Movie Clears Major Worldwide Box Office Milestone (But It’s Still Losing Money)

The new Robert Pattinson sci-fi movie has had an extraordinarily mixed weekend at the box office. Pattinson’s breakout roles came from a pair of young adult franchises, when he played Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and followed that performance by playing Edward Cullen in the five Twilight movies. He has followed this initial success by starring as Bruce Wayne in 2022’s The Batman in addition to starring in more auteur-driven тιтles including Claire Denis’ High Life and the Safdie Brothers’ Good Time.

Robert Pattinson movies generally perform well at the box office, though the blockbusters naturally have consistently made bigger splashes. This includes the Twilight franchise grossing a cumulative $3.3 billion worldwide and The Batman grossing $772.3 million against its roughly $200 million budget, becoming the seventh highest-grossing movie of the year. He has also helped make successes out of mid-budget movies like the Reese Witherspoon romance Water for Elephants, which grossed $117.1 million against its $38 million budget. However, as his new movie proves, not every Pattinson тιтle is a hit.

Mickey 17 Has Pᴀssed A Major Box Office Milestone

It Is In The Top 5 Movies Of The Year

Mickey 17 has accomplished a major box office feat that few movies have done so far in 2025. The new Bong Joon Ho movie stars Robert Pattinson in the тιтle role as an “expendable” who is used to test out a dangerous new environment and is cloned every time he dies. The Mickey 17 release kicked off on March 7, when it debuted at No. 1, knocking Captain America: Brave New World from its perch on top of the domestic chart, which it had held for three consecutive weekends.

Mickey 17 is Bong Joon Ho’s first movie since the 2019 Best Picture winner Parasite.

Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Mickey 17 is projected to end its third weekend in theaters by hitting the $100 million milestone at the global box office. This comes from the $40 million it has earned so far in domestic theaters and the $60 million it has grossed in international markets. Although this makes it just the fifth movie of the year to gross $100 million or more, it is still projected to lose up to $80 million for Warner Bros. by the end of its run due to its enormous $118 million budget.

What This Means For Robert Pattinson

Mickey 17 Is Probably A Fluke

Although this is a disappointing result for the Mickey 17 star, the movie would most likely have become a full-on success if it had a less extravagant budget, especially because it is currently the fourth highest-grossing English language movie of the year. Because of this, and the fact that The Batman 2 is scheduled to premiere in 2027, Pattinson’s career likely won’t be affected by this outcome, though it could potentially impact the short-term prospects of Bong Joon Ho and the sci-fi genre in general, as far as in-development projects with bigger budgets are concerned.
