Monsters is a sci-fi thriller directed by Gareth Edwards in his feature film debut. The film is a unique take on the alien invasion genre, blending elements of romance, drama, and road movie with a backdrop of extraterrestrial terror.
The story is set six years after NASA discovers alien life forms in our solar system and a probe crashes in Mexico, spreading alien organisms across a large portion of Central America. This region is quarantined as an “Infected Zone,” where mᴀssive alien creatures roam freely, and U.S. and Mexican military forces struggle to contain them.
The film follows Andrew Kaulder (Scoot McNairy), a pH๏τojournalist working in Mexico, who is tasked with escorting his boss’s daughter, Samantha Wynden (Whitney Able), back to the U.S. To make the journey, the two must travel through the dangerous Infected Zone, encountering not only the alien creatures but also the human struggles of living in a post-apocalyptic world.
Monsters stands out for its emphasis on character development and atmospheric tension rather than relying on traditional alien action sequences. The film explores themes of survival, human relationships, and the impact of fear and isolation in a world transformed by an alien presence. With a low budget and minimal special effects, director Gareth Edwards uses natural landscapes and subtle CGI to create a believable and haunting world.
