American sharpshooter Matthew Quigley (Tom Selleck) arrives in Australia after responding to a job offer from wealthy cattle baron Elliott Marston (Alan Rickman). Quigley, known for his exceptional long-range shooting skills with a custom Sharps rifle, believes he’s been hired to eliminate wild dingoes.
However, upon arrival, he discovers Marston’s true intentions—to hunt and kill Indigenous Aboriginal people who resist his control over the land. Appalled by this, Quigley refuses and violently confronts Marston’s men. As a result, he is beaten and left for ᴅᴇᴀᴅ in the desert alongside Crazy Cora (Laura San Giacomo), a troubled woman with a tragic past.
With the help of Aboriginal allies, Quigley survives and begins a one-man war against Marston and his ruthless gang. Using his superior marksmanship and survival skills, he systematically takes down Marston’s men. In a climactic showdown, Quigley proves his prowess by defeating Marston in a close-range duel—despite being known for long-distance shooting.
After restoring justice, Quigley prepares to return to America but is stopped by British officers. When asked about his name, he simply replies, “Quigley. Matthew Quigley.”, cementing his legend.
