After Coco 2’s Announcement, I’m Even More Shocked Pixar Never Made A Sequel To Their $535M Movie From 2008

Disney has announced that work has begun on Coco 2, and while it’s an exciting prospect, I’m surprised one of Pixar’s greatest movies still hasn’t gotten a sequel of its own. The Mouse House’s CEO, Bob Iger, has announced that a sequel to Coco is currently in development, and it’s scheduled to be released at some point in 2029. Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina are set to return as director and co-director, so the sequel is being guided by the same visionaries as the original.

Since original movies like Onward and Elemental have been underperforming at the box office in recent years, and sequels like Toy Story 4 and Inside Out 2 have raked in billions, Disney has a new mandate for Pixar: sequels, please. The studio is already working on Toy Story 5 and Incredibles 3, and now, Coco 2 has been confirmed. But there’s still no official word on a sequel to one of Pixar’s best movies, which would actually be really relevant right now.

With Pixar’s Announcement For Coco 2, I’m Surprised A WALL-E Sequel Never Happened

WALL-E’s Environmentalist Themes Are Sadly Still Just As Relevant Today

There are a lot of Pixar movies that could open themselves up to sequels. There’s never been a proper Monsters, Inc. sequel checking in on Mike, Sulley, and Boo; Finding Dory could be followed by Finding Marlin to complete the trifecta; and the Inside Out series could go on indefinitely, following Riley and her emotions through every stage of her life. But one of the most suitable Pixar films for the sequel treatment is Andrew Stanton’s touching sci-fi romance WALL-E.

WALL-E is a cautionary tale about the careless corporate practices that have led to climate change and the destruction of the natural world, and what will happen to the planet if those practices continue.

The themes of WALL-E are, sadly, still very timely today, and are arguably getting even more relevant as time goes on. WALL-E is a cautionary tale about the careless corporate practices that have led to climate change and the destruction of the natural world, and what will happen to the planet if those practices continue. WALL-E ended on a hopeful note, with humans and robots returning to the ravaged Earth to restore the planet to its former glory. A sequel could follow the long road to saving the world from ecological disaster.

Why WALL-E 2 Never Happened

The Filmmakers Consider The Story Complete

WALL-E in space

While it would make commercial sense to produce a sequel, the reason there’s no WALL-E 2 is that the filmmakers consider the story to be complete. Pixar president Jim Morris confirmed that, while a sequel to WALL-E was considered, the studio decided against it, because that story already “had its beginning, middle, and end,” so there’s nowhere else to go with a sequel. If Coco 2 is a success and Pixar runs out of other movies to sequelize, maybe they’ll eventually revisit the idea of a WALL-E sequel.
