New Stephen King Adaptation Climbs Top 3 Highest-Grossing Movie Chart For Neon, Osgood Perkins Now Claims 2/3 Of The Spots With This Update

A new Stephen King adaptation has arrived in the Top 3 on a major box office chart. Stephen King is the author of more than five dozen books and hundreds of short stories, primarily in the horror genre. After the publication of his first novel, 1974’s Carrie, he went on to pen some of the most notable horror тιтles of the 20th century, including ‘Salem’s Lot (1975), The Shining (1977), The ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Zone (1979), Firestarter (1980), The Stand (1978), Cujo (1981), Christine (1983), Pet Sematary (1983), It (1986), Misery (1987), The Dark Half (1989), and Needful Things (1991).

Over the years, many Stephen King movies have brought his work to the screen. This includes adaptations of each of the aforementioned тιтles. Several of his classic novels have even been adapted more than once, including Carrie, which has had three feature-length adaptations, one of which spawned a sequel. Although not all of these movies are financially successful, they have cumulatively grossed more than $3 billion worldwide, with the highest-grossing being 2017’s It ($701 million).

The Monkey Has Climbed Up A Major Chart

It Is One Of NEON’s Best-Performing Movies

The Monkey has leaped onto a major box office chart. The new movie from Longlegs director Osgood Perkins adapts the Stephen King short story of the same name and follows twins Hal and Bill (Christian Convery as kids, Theo James as adults) as they are haunted by a cursed monkey toy that causes random violent deaths to take place around them. The release of The Monkey kicked off in late February, when the movie debuted at No. 2 behind Captain America: Brave New World with a $14 million domestic haul.

The Monkey remained in the domestic Top 5 for three consecutive weekends.

Per The Numbers, The Monkey has climbed to a worldwide box office total of $58.5 million as of the Saturday of its fifth weekend in theaters. This sees it surging past the $53.8 million worldwide total of 2017’s I, Tonya to become the third highest-grossing release ever distributed by NEON. As Longlegs is No. 2 with $125.4 million (behind Parasite with $253.8 million), this means that Osgood Perkins has directed two of their Top 3 тιтles.

What This Means For The Monkey

It Could Start A Trend For NEON

The Monkey joining Longlegs in NEON’s Top 3 could potentially lead the production and distribution company to pursue even more horror. While not every recent genre outing of theirs has been a hit at that level (their roster also includes Cuckoo, Infinity Pool, and Immaculate), the success of two consecutive Osgood Perkins movies could build up their reputation as a purveyor of solid horror offerings. While they are also behind the upcoming non-horror Stephen King тιтle The Life of Chuck, which could similarly be a hit, a major shift in the predominant genre of their output might not be surprising.
