New Netflix Thriller Movie From Train To Busan Director Debuts With Solid Rotten Tomatoes Score

Yeon Sang-ho’s Revelations is already a revelation for critics. Yeon is best known for his zombie horror Train To Busan, which earned nearly $100 million at the box office, and he recently partnered with Netflix to develop a more down-to-earth thriller movie. Revelations has a small cast that stars Ryu Jun-yeol as the vengeful pastor Min-chan, Shin Hyun-been as Detective Yeon-hee, and Shin Min-jae as Yang-rae.

Now, Revelations has debuted with a 73% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 11 reviews. Reviewers offered an average score of 6.4 out of 10. The Tomatometer score is likely to change as more reviews come in, while there is not yet a Popcornmeter score.

What The Rotten Tomatoes Score Means For Revelations

Critics Enjoy Netflix’s Upcoming Thriller

Although Revelations has a solid Rotten Tomatoes, many critics have noted the positive and negative aspects of the Netflix thriller. Some critics argued that the movie lacked a cohesive direction and failed to bring anything new to the genre, while more positive feedback leaned in on the cinematography, Yeon’s direction, and the fight choreography. Not many of the reviewers believed that the movie lived up to the heights of Train To Busan. That comparison is not surprising since the Tomatometer score hardly compares to Yeon’s other hit movies, including Psychokinesis (2018) and Seoul Station (2016). Although Revelations may not appear to be Yeon’s best work based on the latest reviews, it may gain traction on Netflix. A key factor will likely be the movie’s ᴀssociation with Yeon himself due to his line of work in the horror and thriller genres. His partnership with Netflix is critical, which has led to projects like Parasyte and The Bequeathed. Both series have received positive reception from critics. In addition, there has been a growing interest in K-content in streaming, especially following the release of Squid Game season 2.

Our Take On Revelations’ RT Score

This Is A Fairly High Score

Ryu Jun-yeol & Shin Min-jae in Revelations

The very concept behind Revelations is interesting enough to make it a fun watch. The idea of a pastor who turns on criminals feels more akin to Daredevil than any of Yeon’s previous works, which is a nice change of pace for the director. He typically works on more fantastical stories, so it is a breath of fresh air to see him exploring a grounded narrative. The movie may not be as exceptional as Train To Busan or Psychokinesis, but it is still worth watching, if only as another unmemorable Netflix release.
