Jake Gyllenhaal & Josh Brolin’s Survival Thriller With 73% RT Score Climbs Streaming Charts 10 Years Later After Finding New Home

A survival movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Josh Brolin has begun to trend on streaming more than a decade after its premiere. Both co-stars are notable actors. Brolin, who is the son of casting director Jane Cameron and two-time Golden Globe winner James Brolin, has found both critical and commercial success over the course of his career. While one of his most notable roles is playing Thanos in the smash hit Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbusters Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, he has also been nominated for an Oscar for his supporting role as Dan White in 2008’s Milk.

His co-star is also an Oscar nominee, for his performance opposite Heath Ledger in the 2005 Best Picture nominee Brokeback Mountain. Other notable Jake Gyllenhaal movies include Donnie Darko, The Day After Tomorrow, Jarhead, Zodiac, Source Code, Nightcrawler, Ambulance, and 2024’s Road House. Although he has also appeared in the MCU, playing Mysterio in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, his only onscreen collaboration with Brolin so far has been the 2015 movie that is newly surging on streaming.

Everest Is Climbing A Major Chart

The Movie Just Landed On Netflix

2015’s Everest, a Josh Brolin and Jake Gyllenhaal movie which dramatizes real-life events where two teams of climbers were trapped on Mount Everest during a severe storm in 1996, is charting on streaming after finding a new home. The star-studded Everest cast also includes Keira Knightley, Jason Clarke, Robin Wright, Sam Worthington, John Hawkes, Michael Kelly, and Emily Watson. The movie was a solid financial success, grossing $203.4 million worldwide against its $50 million budget and becoming the 38th highest-grossing movie of the year.

Everest was written by William Nicholson and Simon Beaufoy and directed by Baltasar Kormákur.

Just days after being added to Netflix, Everest has begun to climb the streamer’s daily Top 10 chart of their most-watched movies in the United States. On March 21, it debuted on the chart at No. 9, having risen from its previous position of No. 11. On March 22, it remained in the No. 9 position.

At the time of writing, it is the oldest movie on the chart, which includes the new Netflix releases The Twister: Caught in the Storm (No. 2), The Electric State (No. 5) and Plankton (No. 7) as well as the recent theatrical releases Den of Thieves: Pantera (No. 1), Kraven the Hunter (No. 3), Despicable Me 4 (No. 4), and Trap (No. 6). Filling out the list are 2022’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 at No. 8 and 2016’s The Secret Life of Pets at No. 10.

Our Take On Everest’s Netflix Success

The Movie Is Evergreen

It is not entirely a surprise that the Jake Gyllenhaal and Josh Brolin movie has found new success on streaming a decade after its debut. The movie had a reliably solid reception across the board, earning Rotten Tomatoes scores of 73% from critics and 68% from audiences. The Everest true story seems to be able to connect with audiences regardless of the time period, as the original events had taken place nearly two full decades before the release of the movie in the first place.
