After The Russo Brothers’ Recent Comments About The MCU Needing A Central Story, I’m More Confident In Their Avengers: Doomsday Direction

The Russo Brothers’ new comments about the MCU have me even more confident about their direction for Avengers: Doomsday and beyond. Having recently released The Electric State on Netflix, the directing duo have been doing several interviews in recent weeks. As such, one conversation in particular featured some reᴀssuring comments about the next two Avengers movies, which Joe and Anthony Russo are returning to the MCU for alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.

In a recent interview with Comicbook.com, the Russos responded to questions about the major expansions to the MCU that have occurred in the Multiverse Saga since they directed Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. To that end, Anthony Russo confirmed the direction he and his brother are taking when it comes to Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to release in 2026:

“Yes, the MCU has got quite large, that’s for sure. I mean, frankly, we struggle with that same issue, but part of the reason Joe and I decided to go back is exactly what you’re talking about. There needs to be more of a central narrative. That was something we were very specific about when we worked with Marvel [before]. We would like to bring the focused narrative back.”

Even from the most dedicated MCU fans, the consensus has been that the current Multiverse Saga is far more disjointed with less cohesion compared to the previous Infinity Saga. Keeping that in mind, the Russos’ professed desire to have a more focused and central narrative for Avengers: Doomsday (and presumably Secret Wars) is very exciting to hear.

The MCU’s Multiverse Saga Has Had Mixed Results For The Franchise

So Many Unresolved Threads And Disparate Characters

The Multiverse Saga has undoubtedly experienced some major successes, like Spider-Man: No Way Home, ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and more. However, there have also been some significant missteps, particularly with the MCU’s major expansion with various streaming series, and a flawed focus on quanтιтy over quality. While Marvel Studios has begun addressing those concerns going forward, the fact remains that the Multiverse Saga as a whole has been a pretty jumbled mess of disparate stories and events compared to the Infinity Saga and its more connected overarching narrative with Thanos and the Infinity Stones.

To name just a few examples, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was very popular, and yet the character himself hasn’t been seen since his initial 2021 movie. The Eternals haven’t been seen either, and neither has Mahershala Ali’s Blade, who was teased at The Eternals’ end, not to mention all the Multiverse Saga’s unresolved post-credits scenes and more teased characters. The MCU continues to expand, but there hasn’t been any sort of meaningful narrative to thread them all together beyond a handful of references to multiversal incursions.

The Russo Brothers’ Comments About The MCU’s Focus Are Exactly What I Think Could Fix The Most Common Complaints

Generating Better Cohesion For The End of the Multiverse Saga

Keeping all of the above in mind, it’s very reᴀssuring to hear that the Russos intend to bring back a more central narrative and sense of cohesion to the MCU with Avengers: Doomsday. While it’s unfortunate that it’s taken this long with the Multiverse Saga nearing its end, at least it’s something. At any rate, their new comments have made me even more confident that the Russo brothers were the perfect-proven candidates to help get the MCU back on track with the next two Avengers movies.
