Sydney Sweeney To Star In Movie Based On Reddit Short Story, With An Oscar-Winning Screenwriter On Board To Adapt

Sydney Sweeney has experienced a meteoric rise to fame in recent years. Though she started out as a child actor, getting small roles beginning in 2009, Sweeney’s big breakout moment came in 2021 and 2022. In those years, she became famous for playing Olivia Mossbacher in The White Lotus season 1 and got more recognition for her part as Cᴀssie in Euphoria season 2. Both parts ended up earning her Emmy nominations, though she did not win the coveted prize for either role.

Euphoria and The White Lotus acted as Sweeney’s gateway to more roles on both the big and small screen. Sweeney is now set to star in the movie adaptation of I Pretended To Be a Missing Girl. The movie is based on the short story “I pretended to be a missing girl so I could rob her family.” by Joe Cote. Interestingly enough, Cote’s story was a short story originally published on Reddit, as part of the thread “r/nosleep.” The story tells the tale of a person who, as the тιтle would suggest, impersonates a missing girl in an attempt to steal her family’s money, but quickly realizes she has made a terrible mistake. The story was posted about four years ago and has thousands of upvotes.

Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Sweeney will now play the lead in I Pretended To Be A Missing Girl. The project is in the works at Warner Bros. In addition to starring, Sweeney will also produce with her Fifty-Fifty Films label. Fellow producers include Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, Trevor Engelson, and Aaron Folbe. Eric Roth will adapt the screenplay. Exact story and character details have yet to be revealed.
