Robert Pattinson’s New Sci-Fi Movie Lands On Its First All-Time Box Office Charts Despite Underwhelming Opening Weekend

Robert Pattinson‘s new dark comedy lands on its first all-time box office chart despite a lukewarm opening weekend. Best known for playing the romantic lead in The Twilight Saga, Pattinson has made more than $1 billion at the domestic box office and over $4 billion worldwide during his career. Though recent years have seen him gravitate towards smaller, more independent projects, he remains present within the blockbuster space.

In 2022, Pattinson starred as Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’s highly rated superhero movie The Batman, which became the actor’s highest-grossing domestic movie, concluding its theatrical run at $369 million domestically and $770 million globally. However, when it comes to his biggest film globally, that тιтle goes to one of his first major roles, 2005’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, where he played doomed Hogwarts student Cedric Diggory. Since then, Pattinson’s star has only risen, culminating in his most recent effort.

Mickey 17 Is Among The Top 25 Highest-Grossing Dark Comedies Of All Time

The Robert Pattinson-Led Satire Continues To Hit Milestones

The Bong Joon Ho-directed dark comedy Mickey 17 stars Pattinson in the тιтle role and follows him on a space expedition to conquer a new planet. After its premiere at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival in February, the movie was released worldwide on March 7. Despite receiving overall positive reviews from critics and audiences, the film only grossed $19.1 million during its opening weekend.

According to The Numbers, the Pattinson-led movie is the 23rd highest-grossing dark comedy of all time, landing on the chart for the niche genre. The movie has amᴀssed $92 million at the global box office as of writing and $35 million at the domestic box office, putting its total only $1 million behind Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman. Bong’s 2019 movie, Parasite, sits at No. 4 on the chart, with the top spot occupied by the Leonardo DiCaprio-led The Wolf of Wall Street with $389 million globally.

What This Means For Mickey 17

Mickey 17 Has A Chance At Top 20

For a film that cost $118 million to make and roughly $81 million to market, Mickey 17 is halfway from breaking even. Given that the film has only been in theaters for less than two full weeks, it seems that there might be a chance for Pattinson’s new movie to turn a profit, as opposed to the initial projection. During its second weekend, the movie only garnered $7 million domestically. However, similar to Bong’s Oscar-winning movie Parasite, which saw its international box office almost double its domestic record, Mickey 17‘s international box office has earned $22 million more than the domestic box office.

It seems that Mickey 17 will continue climbing the charts as it finishes the rest of the theatrical run. Though it likely won’t be setting many more records, it could earn enough to lessen any potential financial disappointment. Streaming and VOD could help it gain a bigger audience further on down the road. Entering the top 25 on the dark comedy all-time chart indicates a continued interest in the new Robert Pattinson movie, which could potentially roll over to digital platforms.
