Is Snow White Suitable For Children? Parents Guide To Disney’s Live-Action Remake

Snow White is the latest Disney live-action remake, but how suitable is it for younger audiences? Hitting the big screen in 1937 and serving as the debut feature film of the Walt Disney Animation studio, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has been entertaining generations of children for almost a century. It’s the latest film from the Disney animated library to get the live-action treatment, with Snow White‘s cast getting the chance to bring the iconic characters to life in a slightly modified form.

While much of Snow White is consistent with the original movie that inspired it, some elements of the story and characters have been updated for modern times. Coupled with some modern updates to the original film’s more intense beats, some parents might be curious if it’s too intense to bring their children to. The MPAA’s rating for Snow White feels like the correct rating and underscores why the movie is a solid pick for families with young children.

Disney’s Snow White Is Rated PG

Snow White Includes Some Minor Violence, Peril, And Brief Rude Humor

Snow White is Rated PG and doesn’t contain too much inappropriate content, making it suitable for most children. Based on the Grimm Brothers fairy tale of the same name, there have been hundreds of versions of Snow White, with many directed at younger audiences. Snow White largely follows a similar suit, maintaining a largely colorful and innocent tone. The MPA rated Snow White PG for “violence, some peril, thematic elements and brief rude humor.” There’s not much on-screen violence in the film, although one character’s brush with death is a big plot point.

The frightening visuals of Snow White’s first foray into the forest alone is likely why Snow White earned a PG.

There is also not a lot of rude humor in the movie. Snow White‘s thematic exploration of what being a ruler means and the way the Evil Queen targets her over it is likely one of the reasons the film was rated PG. More than anything, the frightening visuals of Snow White’s first foray into the forest alone is likely why Snow White earned a PG. However, much as in the original film, these visuals are contrasted with a much softer and more colorful sequence that’s perfect for kids.

Snow White Is Mostly Suitable For Children

Snow White Is A Sweet And Colorful Film That Is Fun For Younger Audiences

While there are some elements of Snow White that might be too scary for younger children like Snow’s escape through the woods or the Evil Queen’s transformation into the hag, there’s nothing too aggressive or offensive to make it unsuitable for children. Snow White will likely be a hit with younger audiences, with the goofy sequences of Dopey dancing or Rachel Ziegler’s innocent chemistry with Andrew Burnap providing a charming experience. Young children may not get the full thematic depth of the plot or be scared by the forest, but these are secondary elements of the film.

At the core, Snow White is a colorful and sweet natured romance that is full of goofy beats and cute romance. Even the more intense elements, like the Evil Queen, are played by Gal Gadot with a broadly cartoonish energy that fits the tone and keeps it from ever feeling too frightening. Snow White is a perfectly acceptable movie for younger audiences and families looking to see a sweet story on the big screen, with only some minor elements that might upset younger audiences.
