Chris Pratt & Millie Bobby Brown’s New Sci-Fi Movie Becomes Netflix Global Hit Despite 15% Rotten Tomatoes Score

Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown are two of the biggest names in streaming, and they have teamed up for a new Netflix hit. After rising to prominence for playing Andy Dwyer on the sitcom Parks and Recreation, Pratt solidified his fame by starring in two highly successful film franchises – playing Star-Lord in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Owen Grady in the Jurᴀssic World trilogy. In recent years, he’s also had a consistent presence on streaming, starring in the Prime Video movie The Tomorrow War and the series The Terminal List.

On the other hand, the British actress broke out as Eleven in Netflix’s mᴀssively popular sci-fi series Stranger Things, for which she has earned two Emmy nominations. Besides her role in the Monsterverse movies Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong, Brown’s career has been confined to Netflix. She has starred in and produced two Enola Holmes movies, with a third on the way. She also starred in the 2024 fantasy film Damsel and now, Brown has a new Netflix sci-fi film that pairs her with Pratt.

The Electric State Becomes A Global Netflix Hit

It Ranks 1st For This Week

The Electric State has become a global Netflix hit. From the writers and directors behind Avengers: Endgame, loosely based on the illustrated novel of the same name, Netflix’s new sci-fi film is set in a retro-futuristic version of the 1990s and follows Millie Bobby Brown as an orphaned teenager who hits the road with a mysterious robot to find her long-lost brother, teaming up with a smuggler played by Chris Pratt and his wisecracking robot sidekick. The Electric State‘s cast also includes Ke Huy Quan, Jason Alexander, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, Giancarlo Esposito, and Stanley Tucci.

Now, Netflix’s new sci-fi film has become a global hit. The Electric State ranks first on Netflix’s Global Top 10 movies for this week with 25.2 million views and 53.8 million hours viewed. It ranks above Plankton: The Movie, Kraven the Hunter, Trap, Despicable Me 4, IF, Bee Movie, Chaos: The Manson Murders, The Boss Baby, and The Croods.

The Electric State is Netflix’s No. 1 movie in 47 countries this week, including the United States, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Australia, and South Africa.

Our Take On The Electric State’s Netflix Success

It’s A Disappointing, But Expected Outcome

Because of the star power behind The Electric State, its success on Netflix isn’t a surprise. However, based on its star-studded cast combined with its reported $320 million budget, making it one of the most expensive movies ever made, many viewers have been shocked at just how bad The Electric State actually is, indicated by its dismal 15% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The Electric State reviews have excoriated the film for lacking any semblance of energy or excitement.

The Electric State marks a new low for the streaming service and the Russo brothers, whose last Netflix movie, The Gray Man, received a 45% Rotten Tomatoes score. It represents a larger trend for Netflix movies overall, many of which are either glaringly bad or utterly forgettable. The Electric State is unsurprisingly a hit since subscribers are attracted to its star power, and it remains disappointing that this seems to be the standard Netflix is aiming for.
