Happy Gilmore 2: Release Date, Cast, Story, Trailer & Everything We Know

The original is one of Adam Sandler’s best comedies, and now Happy Gilmore 2 is coming very soon. Happy Gilmore was a key movie that, alongside Billy Madison, helped make Adam Sandler a comedy leading man. The 1996 hit featured Sandler as the тιтle character, a failed ice hockey player who discovers an unlikely talent for golf. He uses this skill to win prize money that would help his grandmother get her house back, but first, he has to beat a jealous rival and learn to control his explosive anger.

Happy Gilmore made great use of Sandler’s comic skills and featured a fantastic supporting cast, including Christopher McDonald as Gilmore’s rival Shooter McGavin, Carl Weathers, and an uncredited Ben Stiller as evil retirement home orderly Hal. The success of the film led to bigger movies for Adam Sandler like The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy, but Happy Gilmore is still considered one of his funniest films. Happy Gilmore still has a sizable cult following, and despite Sandler’s aversion to making sequels, Happy Gilmore 2 is arriving in 2025.

Who Will Return For The Sequel?

Sandler revealed in an August 2024 interview that NFL star Travis Kelce and Uncut Gems co-director Benny Safdie will have cameo roles.

Unfortunately, the cast of Happy Gilmore 2 would be noticeably different from the first because of some real-world developments in the three decades since its release. Sandler will be back on hand to reprise his role as former hockey player Happy Gilmore, but the rest of the cast is entirely contingent upon where the story of the prospective sequel decides to go. Other returns include Christopher McDonald as the villainous Shooter McGavin, and reporter-turned-love interest, Virginia Venit, played by Julie Bowen. Newcomer Margaret Qualley has been tapped to play an unknown role.

Happy Gilmore 2 Story Details

What Could Happen When Happy Returns?

Adam Sandler yells at a golf ball in Happy Gilmore

With the plot of Happy Gilmore resolved by the end of the film, the sequel is extremely open-ended and nearly anything can happen. Though Sandler has always been cagey about sequels, he did reveal an idea for Happy Gilmore 2‘s story in 2022, and that could shine a light on what his mysterious script is about. In the interview, Sandler mused about a potential sequel that catches up with Happy in his older years as he still grapples with his temper.

Based on the kernel of an idea, it’s easy to see Happy returning to the golf world on a senior tour and taking on his old nemesis Shooter McGavin. A more mature Happy is an interesting prospect for Sandler, who has recently shown off his acting range in films like Uncut Gems. Until more details are revealed, Happy Gilmore 2 will remain a mystery.

As a Christmas gift, Netflix dropped a short teaser for Happy Gilmore 2 just in time for the holidays in late 2024. The brief first look opens with Happy taking one of his familiar running drives, before cutting to some of the movie’s many celebrity cameos. Julie Bowen’s Virginia gives Happy some words of encouragement, and it’s clear that their relationship is strong. Finally, Happy squares off with his old nemesis, Shooter McGavin, after they accidentally meet in a cemetery.

Netflix dropped the first real trailer for the sequel in March 2025, and Happy Gilmore 2 looks to be a strong follow-up. The teaser opens with Happy seeing his bust among other greats like Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer, but the likeness is anything but flattering. After revealing he hasn’t golfed in years, Happy returns to the course and imagines a new happy place. The trailer then shows quick cuts of various new and returning characters, including Shooter McGavin and Virginia. In the final scene, Happy’s overpowered drive punches a hole in a golf simulator.
