“That Can’t Be Right”: Gwyneth Paltrow Reflects On Her 7-Movie Marvel Career And Explains How She Didn’t Know She Was In Spider-Man: Homecoming

Pepper Potts actor Gwyneth Paltrow looks back on her seven-movie MCU journey. Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts is one of the first characters ever introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Pepper made her MCU debut in Iron Man, after which she appeared in Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Notably, Pepper Potts fought Aldrich Killain in Iron Man 3‘s final battle, and she participated in Avengers: Endgame‘s crowded final battle wearing her Rescue battle armor, designed by Tony Stark.

When asked about her experience playing Pepper Potts in seven MCU movies by Vanity Fair, Gwyneth Paltrow was shocked to hear she played the same MCU character in so many movies. When asked whether Pepper Potts appears in Captain America: Brave New World, Paltrow said, “What is that?”. Paltrow also joked that she doesn’t know if she’ll appear in any upcoming movies, as . Read Gwyneth Paltrow’s full response below:

“That can’t be right. I can’t have been in seven? Is that true? One time I didn’t realize I was in Spider-Man. I was like doing a scene with Robert and Jon Favreau so I thought it was a cameo. They’re like, ‘it’s another…’ Anyway. And it turned out I was in Spider-Man and I didn’t even realize.”

[When asked about Captain America: Brave New World]: “What is that? Oh, no. I don’t think so. I think I would’ve known by now. I may. We’ll see. They keep it all very top secret, you know. They think they’re the CIA or something over there. That it’s like national secrets. Like who’s doing what and who. That’s why I didn’t know I was in Spider-Man! ‘Cause they never said. There were no signs that said ‘Spider-Man’. The script didn’t say ‘Spider-Man’. It’s all a secret.

What Gwyneth Paltrow’s Marvel Movie Comments Mean

Not Every Marvel Actor Is A Diehard MCU Fan

Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark Iron Man in Spider Man Homecoming

Gwyneth Paltrow was one of the earliest actors to join the MCU, and she has appeared in seven MCU movies so far. However, she is nowhere near as acquainted with the MCU as other actors. Pepper Potts also hasn’t interacted with many major MCU characters, and she only started participating in major MCU events until Avengers: Endgame. Unlike actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Holland, Gwyneth Paltrow must lack a lot of context about her characters’ appearances.

What’s more, Gwyneth Paltrow’s Spider-Man: Homecoming cameo was limited to the movie’s ending, which set up Spider-Man’s future adventures with the Iron Spider suit and Pepper’s marriage with Tony Stark — both of them events that were paid off in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. It’s easy for many viewers and even some casual fans to mix up the placement of these events in the MCU’s chronological timeline with precision.

Our Take On Gwyneth Paltrow’s Marvel Movie Comments

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts May Return In The Future

While Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t personally attached to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she’s more likely to reprise her MCU role in the near future than other actors. Tony Stark’s death gives Pepper Potts and Morgan Stark a strong argument to remain absent from the Avengers’ battles. However, future MCU installments like the upcoming Ironheart series and Armor Wars movie seem like appropriate places to feature Pepper Potts’ return, at least in the form of a cameo.
