Colin Farrell Looking To Join James Gunn’s DC Universe In The Movie Role Daniel Craig Exited (Not As The Penguin)

The Penguin star Colin Farrell is reportedly in talks to star in Sgt. Rock, replacing Daniel Craig after the latter dropped out of the DCU movie. Daniel Craig was initially going to play the тιтular hero in Luca Guadagnino’s Sgt. Rock movie, but the Queer star exited the project only a couple of months after joining it. Since then, speculation about who could replace Craig put foward many relevant movie and TV stars, including The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White. Now, DC Comics’ Franklin John Rock may have found its live-action actor.

As reported by ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, The Penguin‘s Colin Farrell is interested in playing Franklin John Rock in DC Studios’ Sgt. Rock. Farrell recently won the Golden Globe for his performance as Oz Cobb in DC’s The Penguin miniseries. Farrell will reprise his Penguin role in Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II, and there’s a chance The Penguin season 2 could materialize due to the first season’s mᴀssive success. This means that Farrell could play two DC roles at the same time.

What Colin Farrell Potentially Starring In DC’s Sgt Rock Movie Means

Colin Farrell Could Be The Next Actor To Play Two Comic Book Characters From The Same Company

Colin Farrell won the Golden Globe, the Screen Actors Guild Award, and the Critics’ Choice Television Award for his starring role in 2024’s The Penguin. Just a few months later, Farrell might join the DCU as the lead actor in Sgt. Rock. Many actors have played multiple comic book characters, but few of them have played more than one character from the same brand, let alone simultaneously. The closest parallel to Colin Farrell’s double DC role would be Jason Momoa, who played Aquaman in the DCEU before being cast as Lobo in the DCU.

Colin Farrell’s Penguin and Sgt. Rock roles would be completely separate, however. Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise takes place in an Elseworlds universe that won’t cross over with James Gunn’s DCU. Both Reeves and Gunn have debunked the theories that Robert Pattinson’s Batman will be the one featured in Andy Muschietti’s The Brave and the Bold. Therefore, Colin Farrell could play Franklin John Rock without the risk of any storytelling difficulties.

Our Take On Colin Farrell Potentially Starring In DC’s Sgt Rock Movie

Colin Farrell’s Penguin Is Very Different From Sgt. Rock

Sgt. Rock DC Comics Character

Colin Farrell’s chamaleonic performance as Oz Cobb in The Penguin makes his double DC role much easier to digest for general audiences. Farrell was unrecognizable in The Penguin, not only due to the top-notch make-up work used in the series, but also because of Farrell’s performance. Since Sgt. Franklin John Rock is an extremely different character in terms of physical appearance and personality, it wouldn’t be confusing to see the same actor return so soon in a live-action DC тιтle. Sgt. Rock‘s WWII setting also helps distance it from The Penguin‘s modern-day Gotham.
