Mortal Kombat 2’s New Villain Has Been In The Making For 28 Years

A major villain will appear in Mortal Kombat 2 after being cut out of a previous Mortal Kombat movie. There have been three live-action Mortal Kombat films that have featured the most popular characters from the video game franchise. However, the first two films based on the fighting games were unfortunately not well-received. 1995’s Mortal Kombat and 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation were panned by critics. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, specifically, has a shockingly low score of 4% on Rotten Tomatoes (via Rotten Tomatoes).

This is why it was a relief when 2021’s Mortal Kombat rebooted the franchise. The reboot film introduced new versions of the most iconic Mortal Kombat characters. However, even though a lot of the characters have been seen in live-action, there are still some that haven’t. Thankfully, after the ending of the 2021 reboot, the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 is the perfect time to introduce one of the franchise’s best villains, Quan Chi. Quan Chi was actually originally planned to appear in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, but his scene was cut from the final film.

Quan Chi Will Be In Mortal Kombat 2 After Almost Appearing In Annihilation

Quan Chi’s Mortal Kombat 2 Appearence Is 28 Years In The Making

After the action-packed ending of 2021’s Mortal Kombat, it has been confirmed that the sequel will include an actual tournament. This means that many characters that didn’t appear in the 2021 film can be featured in the sequel. Out of all of Mortal Kombat 2’s characters, I am definitely most excited to see Quan Chi. This is especially the case since the villainous character was actually originally supposed to appear in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation before being cut out.

In the scene, Shinnok meets with Quan Chi, teasing that Earthrealm will still be in danger in a third Mortal Kombat movie.

This deleted scene was meant to be included at the end of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. In the scene, Shinnok meets with Quan Chi, teasing that Earthrealm will still be in danger in a third Mortal Kombat movie. Obviously, this third movie never ended up happening, which is somewhat disappointing, since it would have been great to see Quan Chi take on Earthrealm’s warriors. However, given the reviews of the 90s Mortal Kombat movies, fans of the franchise will likely see a much better version of Quan Chi in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2.

Quan Chi Is Exactly The Villain Mortal Kombat 2 Needs After The 2021 Reboot

Quan Chi Will Be A Major Threat To Earthrealm In Mortal Kombat 2

Aside from the fact that a tournament is confirmed, Mortal Kombat 2 is the perfect movie to introduce Quan Chi since Netherrealm, where the necromancer is from, has not yet been shown in the rebooted franchise. In fact, even though the 2021 film focused on Scorpion a lot, it actually didn’t show that much of his origin. In addition to not including Netherrealm, there was also no indication that Quan Chi was actually the one who killed Hanzo’s family while disguised as Bi-Han. Since this happens in the lore of the games, this could potentially be explored in the sequel.

In addition to this important piece of lore which completely changes Scorpion and Sub-Zero’s rivalry, it also needs to be noted that Quan Chi is capable of bringing characters back from the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. Therefore, he will likely be the one to revive many of the characters who died in the 2021 film. In doing so, Quan Chi will increase Outworld’s odds of winning the Mortal Kombat tournament against Earthrealm. For these reasons, I can’t wait to see Quan Chi finally make his first official live-action appearance in Mortal Kombat 2.
