Joseph Kosinski has been building an impressive filmography over the last 15 years as a director. After working on videos, Kosinski would direct his first feature film in 2010, with the sequel Tron: Legacy. Though it received mixed reviews, the film’s iconic soundtrack and distinctive visual layout would renew interest in the Tron franchise nearly 30 years after the Jeff Bridges original. This year, the series will continue with Tron: Ares, but Kosinski will not be directing.
The director came into prominence when he helmed Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. Continuing a career trend starting with his feature film debut, the movie was a long-awaited sequel to an ’80s movie. And it was a huge success. Top Gun: Maverick received rave reviews, and grossed just under $1.5 billion, becoming the second-highest grossing movie of 2022 (losing only to James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water). The film also received multiple Oscar nominations, winning Best Sound. Right now, Kosinski’s 2017 film is doing well on the streaming charts.
Only The Brave Is Storming Onto The Streaming Charts
The Film Did Not Do Well In Theaters
Only the Brave is now doing well on streaming. The 2017 based-on-a-true story drama saw Kosinski reunite with Tron: Legacy star Bridges in a movie that chronicled the story of a group of elite firefighters who risk everything to protect their town from a historic wildfire. In addition to Bridges, Only the Brave featured a leading cast including Josh Brolin, Taylor Kitsch, and Miles Teller, the latter of whom Kosinski would work with again on Top Gun: Maverick. Only the Brave struggled theatrically, making $26.3 million against a $38 million budget.
Per FlixPatrol, Only the Brave is now doing well on streaming eight years after its release. The movie is currently no. 6 on the Paramount+ top 10 movies in the United States today, March 17. It is beaten out by Gladiator II, Long Gone Heroes, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, and Kosinski’s own Top Gun: Maverick, but ranks above September 5, The Painter, Gladiator, and Transformers One.
What This Means For Kosinski
Kosinski Has A Big Release This Year
The Paramount+ chart illuminates multiple viewing trends. Audiences may be particularly interested in Brolin-starring films, as the actor is also one of the leads in Sicario: Day of the Soldado. In even better news, people are taking a look at the Kosinski oeuvre beyond just Top Gun: Maverick, which generally does well on the platform. This is good news for Kosinski, who is directing F1 this year. F1 was made for a hefty price tag, but with audiences gaining interested in the director’s work, it is more likely to do well.
