The new Robert Pattinson science fiction movie has surpᴀssed a major box office milestone despite setbacks during its second weekend. Pattinson is a well-known actor who got his start in prominent franchises, including playing Cedric Diggory in 2005’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise, which spanned five movies that were released between 2008 and 2012. However, as he grew older, he began to take on more idiosyncratic roles.
While he has since returned to franchise filmmaking in a major way by leading the cast of The Batman in the тιтle role, he has become better known for working with auteur directors such as the Safdie Brothers, who he partnered with in their 2017 movie Good Time, and Robert Eggers, who he worked with in the 2019 horror feature The Lighthouse. Other тιтles that saw him work with notable directors include Claire Denis’ High Life, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars, and his new 2025 science fiction movie that is rising at the box office.
Mickey 17 Is Climbing The Domestic Chart
It Was Nevertheless Hit Hard In Week 2
Mickey 17 has now reached a major domestic milestone. The new movie, which was directed by Parasite‘s Bong Joon Ho, stars Robert Pattinson as a man who is repeatedly cloned and used to test the ᴅᴇᴀᴅly new planet that humanity is attempting to colonize. The Mickey 17 release kicked off on March 7, taking No. 1 at the domestic box office with a debut haul of $19 million, which was the best ever in North America for Bong Joon Ho but still came nowhere close to the movie’s $118 million budget.
With its high budget, the break-even point for Mickey 17 is likely somewhere around $295 million.
Per Variety, as of Saturday morning, Mickey 17 is projected to reach a cumulative gross of $33 million at the domestic box office by the end of its second weekend in theaters. This will allow it to push past the $30 million milestone, even though its week-on-week drop is set to be a relatively harsh 60%. In terms of recent original sci-fi, it is about par with recent disappointments like 2023’s The Creator (which dropped 55.6%) and behind 2022’s Moonfall (which dropped 70.1%).
What This Means For Mickey 17
It Has Entered The Upper Echelon Of 2025
At the time of writing, Mickey 17 has become only the eighth 2025 release to pᴀss the $30 million domestic milestone, behind Heart Eyes, The Monkey, Den of Thieves: Pantera, Paddington in Peru, One of Them Days, Dog Man, and Captain America: Brave New World. While this distinction shows that the Robert Pattinson movie is connecting with audiences in a way that few other тιтles have so far this year, it still will most likely not be enough for it to overcome the financial risk posed by its huge budget.
