After Wicked, I’m Confident Disney Call Pull Off This Live-Action Remake Of One Of Their Biggest Musicals

Disney could definitely pull off a live-action adaptation of a certain beloved animated movie, particularly after the success of Wicked with critics and audiences. Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked adapts the 2003 Broadway musical and offers a powerful story of how Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba Thropp overcomes judgment for her green skin, her friendship with the popular Galinda Upland (Ariana Grande-Butera), and her eventual rise as the Wicked Witch of the West. Although it only covers act one of the musical, the movie was critically acclaimed for its powerful performances, stellar sets and costumes, and effective usage of Wicked‘s iconic songs.

Meanwhile, Disney has released many live-action remakes of their animated classics, with the new iterations of Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and Beauty and the Beast ranked as some of their highest-grossing. While there have been mixed results with remakes of Dumbo, The Lion King, and Pinocchio, there are plans for further live-action adaptations. Disney’s growing list of upcoming live-action remakes includes Lilo and Sтιтch, Moana, and Snow White. Given that Frozen is one of their most critically and commercially successful animated movies, Disney will certainly attempt to pull off a live-action adaptation and the recent success of Wicked confirms its potential.

Wicked Made Me Realize How Great A Live-Action Frozen Movie Would Be

Frozen Is One Of The Most Successful Animated Movies Of All Time

Released in 2013, Frozen features a story of self-discovery, family, and love and quickly rose to become one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. Created by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, Frozen is one of the most successful animated movies in the Disney company’s history, completely flipping the dynamic of Disney princesses through its depiction of the bond between sisters, Anna and Elsa, and its stunning soundtrack. Now, Wicked‘s success with critics and at the box office gives an idea of how big a Frozen live-action movie could be.

Similar to Wicked, Disney’s Frozen focuses on the relationship between Anna and Elsa, two sisters who are forcibly separated through circumstances and tragedy, and is set in the visually stunning world of Arendelle, inspired by the Norwegian towns of Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, and Røros (via FjordTours). Frozen also has many amazing musical sequences, including “For the First Time in Forever,” and the Oscar-winning “Let It Go.” If Disney does go through with making a live-action movie of Frozen, they should use Wicked as their blueprint for production design, casting, and soundtrack.

Elsa in Disney’s Frozen is voiced by Idina Menzel, who originated the role of Elphaba Thropp in the Broadway production of Wicked.

Will Disney Ever Remake Frozen In Live-Action?

A Live-Action Adaptation Of Frozen Has Been Anticipated For Years

Elsa and Anna in Frozen

Since the release of Frozen II in 2019, rumors have speculated that a live-action adaptation of Frozen is in the works at Disney Studios. While it is known that Disney has several other remakes in development, including their upcoming live-action adaptations of Hercules and Tangled, there has not yet been any confirmation of a live-action Frozen remake. Disney appears to be focusing their attention on the third animated installment in the Frozen franchise, Frozen III, expected to be released in November 2027, which may push back any plans for a live-action remake.

If Disney experiences critical and financial success with its upcoming live-action movies, it is possible that they would push the date forward for a Frozen remake.

However, if Disney experiences critical and financial success with its upcoming live-action movies, it is possible that they would push the date forward for a Frozen remake. The Snow White remake is already setting records while the official trailer for the Lilo and Sтιтch live-action movie has debuted, the movie scheduled for release in May 2025. Depending on how well these тιтles and Moana especially do, Disney could begin production on a Frozen remake sooner than anticipated. While no production date has been announced, if they look to Wicked‘s success, Disney will easily pull off a live-action adaptation of one of their most celebrated movies.
