The trailer for Freakier Friday has arrived. The movie is a legacy sequel to the 2003 comedy Freaky Friday, which adapted the book of the same name by Mary Rodgers and followed teenager Anna Coleman (Lindsay Lohan) accidentally switching bodies with her mother Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis). The upcoming Freakier Friday, which was directed by Nisha Ganatra, will expand the premise even more, following the duo switching bodies with Anna’s daughter Harper (Julia ʙuттers) and her boyfriend Eric’s (Manny Jacinto) daughter Lily (Sophia Hammons).
Disney has now released the official trailer for Freakier Friday. It opens with Anna and Tess visiting a palm reader played by Vanessa Bayer, who recognizes that their life lines have crossed before, something that taught them “a lesson that may serve you again.” When the four-way body swap occurs, hijinks ensue while Chappell Roan’s “H๏τ TO GO!” blares on the soundtrack, including the teenagers in the adults’ bodies flying through the air in a car. The trailer then ends with the arrival of Chad Michael Murray, reprising the role of the hunky love interest Jake. Watch the trailer below:
What This Means For Freakier Friday
The Movie Looks Both Forward And Backward
This trailer reveals quite a bit about the tone and plot of Freakier Friday. Naturally, the follow-up to the iconic Lindsay Lohan movie will incorporate quite a bit of nostalgia, coming as it does more than twenty years after the original. This includes recreating moments from the original, such as the quartet gathering in front of the mirror to gaze in shock at their new faces.
Jamie Lee Curtis’ line in the Freakier Friday trailer comparing her face to a Birkin bag that has been left to rot is a reference to the original movie’s iconic line “I’m like the Cryptkeeper!“
However, the trailer reveals that the movie also looks forward with a fresh perspective that is underscored by the use of the modern hit “H๏τ TO GO!” In addition to bringing in two new teenage stars, it also centers notable actors from more recent projects, including Saturday Night Live‘s Vanessa Bayer and The Good Place and The Acolyte star Manny Jacinto. The comedy also pushes the original movie to greater heights, especially in the car sequence, which simultaneously hearkens back to the car chase from the 1976 Jodie Foster version of Freaky Friday and embraces a more modern, action-forward approach.

This includes the fact that Anna is no longer with Jake, though his surprise arrival may threaten to disrupt her relationship with Eric. A scene of Anna playing the guitar also reveals that she is still involved in playing music in some capacity with her band Pink Slip, though it is unclear if music is a hobby or a profession for the character.
