Naomie Harris thinks her Black Bag co-star could be a candidate for the next James Bond. As the 007 franchise recently changed creative hands from Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson to Amazon, the search continues for a new lead for Bond 26. Harris has previously been a part of the Bond franchise, playing the role of Miss Moneypenny in Skyfall, Spectre, and No Time To Die. She is currently in the Steven Soderbergh-directed spy movie Black Bag, which premieres in theaters on March 14.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Harris suggested that her Black Bag co-star Regé-Jean Page should be the next James Bond. The interviewer asked Page for his thoughts on his potential Bond casting, to which he responded that he has not “thought about [it] very much.” Harris chimed in, saying that she “thinks we should nominate Regé” and also bring back other actors such as herself. She said she would “vote for it” but her “vote doesn’t count.” Check out the quotes from Page and Harris below:
Page: It’s not something I’ve thought about very much. Like I’m a bit of a racehorse, focusing tensely with what’s in front of me, and then I go back to the stable and go to sleep. So I haven’t really meditated on it much.
Harris: I think we should nominate Regé and then also just ensure they bring back the old band. J’ai moi. I would vote for it 100%, but my vote doesn’t count, but if it did, I’d vote for it.
What This Means For James Bond
Regé-Jean Page Has Been Pitched Before
While many candidates to play Bond have been floating in the cultural milieu in recent years, it was about four years ago that Page’s name first started circulating as the next 007. This followed the actor’s debut on the Netflix series Bridgerton, where he played Simon Bᴀsset, Duke of Hastings. Page was a fan-favorite actor in the romantic drama, and his popularity led to an online campaign to get him into serious consideration to play Bond. Based on his interview response, however, he clearly has not been asked to play the role.
While Harris is right that she did not get a direct “vote” in the process, the former Bond star’s enthusiasm for Page’s potential in the role could be a good sign for the actor. Currently, it’s unclear how far along Amazon has gotten in the casting process since the takeover remains fresh. Nevertheless, the franchise does have a history of stars appearing in multiple Bond eras, so a Harris return as Moneypenny is plausible. The chances are ultimately up to Amazon if they want to bring back any former stars, which could work in their favor due to their familiarity.
Our Take On Page’s Potential James Bond Casting
Regé-Jean Page Fits The Description
The way I see it, there are factors in Page’s favor when it comes to playing James Bond. If cast soon, he is around the right age, at 37 years old. Before giving up creative control, Broccoli was adamant about casting an actor in his 30s, and while Page is in his late 30s, the likelihood that he could play the role for a decade or longer is high. Page, who is mixed race, would also be an opportunity to create more diversity in the Bond casting since all previous Bonds have been played by White men.
