The Beast’s Human Design Gets An Upgrade In Alternative Beauty & The Beast Art

The Beast’s human form is reimagined in a new piece of Beauty and the Beast art. The influential 1991 Disney animated feature followed a young woman named Belle who is held by a terrifying beast in his castle, only to uncover his true self as she spends time with him. In Beauty and the Beast, the тιтular monster voiced by Robby Benson was a vain, self-centered prince who was cursed alongside his loyal staff by a sorceress for his unkindness, and only true love could break the spell.

Artist @BleydhDu on X/Twitter recently shared their own reimagining of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, envisioning how they feel the Beast should truly look when restored to a human. As opposed to the long-haired, cleanly shaven man who was originally designed for the movie, this version of the human Beast is built closer to his monstrous form, with a beard and similar facial structure. Even the shades of his hair and beard match more closely with that of Beast’s fur. Check out the artwork below:

What This Means About Beauty And The Beast’s Animation

Great Lengths Were Taken In Creating The Character, But There Are Some Critiques

Great care was taken to craft the appearance of the Beast during the development of 1991’s Beauty and the Beast, from ensuring that he was grounded in reality to making sure his eyes remained human throughout each incarnation of the character. Jeffrey Katzenberg even ensured animator Glen Keane wouldn’t base the design on Benson. However, likely due to how little time it appears onscreen, the same can’t quite be said for the Beast’s human form.

In comparison, his human form fits traditional beauty standards with his appearance as a tall, slender man with flowing auburn hair. While this design matches the shredded painting seen earlier in the movie, his appearance has still been critiqued as underwhelming by some. It also seems rather different from the physique seen within the Beast, something the above art tries to rectify. With Keane also admitting that the Beast’s true name was an afterthought, it is likely greater focus was given to the beastly form, and in the end, his human self was intended to be as broadly handsome as possible.

The Artist Put Real Thought Into Crafting A Fitting Look

One of the most debated elements of Beauty and the Beast in the years since its release is that of the Beast’s true appearance. While some have cited issues with the angle and execution of the big reveal, others have criticized how different he is to the form that audiences had spent most of the movie getting to know. As such, the above fan design feels like a perfect reimagining that addresses the many complaints while also crafting an appearance that evokes elements of his monstrous form.
