Rachel Zegler has had one of the quickest rises to fame of any Hollywood actor in her generation. Steven Spielberg plucked her from obscurity when he sent out an open casting call for his version of West Side Story. Playing Maria in the 2021 movie would be life-changing for Zegler who, in one role, could show off both her voice and acting chops. The role earned her a Critics’ Choice Award nomination for Best Young Actor/Actress and a Golden Globe win for Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical or Comedy.
Because Zegler’s first on-screen role was working with Spielberg, something interesting about her film career so far is how heavily focused it has been on mainstream Hollywood blockbusters. In 2023, she played the lead role of Lucy Gray Baird in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and this year, she is about to play the тιтular Disney princess in the live-action adaptation of Snow White. However, Zegler was also in a smaller A24 film, which is now getting a streaming release.
Y2K Is Coming To Max
The Movie Did Not Do Well In Theaters
Y2K has set its streaming release date. Set during the iconic turnover between 1999 and 2000, the comedy horror film focuses on a teenage boy duo who are determined to make their millennium party great and woo the girls of their dreams. When the clock strikes midnight, however, things take a turn for the sci-fi horror. The movie’s ensemble featured Zegler alongside Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison, Lachlan Watson, Kyle Mooney, and Fred Durst playing himself. Y2K got mixed reviews, getting a 43% Tomatometer and 52% Popcornmeter. Its box office was even more paltry, making only $4.4 million worldwide.
ScreenRant‘s Mae Abdulbaki gave Y2K 4 out of 10 stars, saying the movie “turns into a messy romp that loses its intrigue.”
Months after its underwhelming release, Y2K is coming to streaming. The Mooney-directed film will land on Max on Friday, April 4. This will be followed by the film’s debut on HBO linear on Sunday, April 5 at 8:00pm EST.
Our Take On Y2K’s Streaming Debut
The Movie Could Do Well On Streaming
Given how long ago it was released in theaters, and the lackluster nature of its initial reception, it is surprising that this movie did not come to streaming earlier. Though this would likely have been too soon, its setting would make the film perfect for a streaming release around New Year’s Eve. That said, I have hope that Y2K can do well on streaming despite its underperformance theatrically. It may not be A24’s best horror film, but it is goofy and filled with cool gadget-based villains, making for an entertaining ride.
