Spinal Tap 2 Trailer Turns Things Up Past 11 With Release Month Revealed

The first trailer for Spinal Tap 2 has officially been released, revealing the movie’s release month. The movie will be the follow-up to Rob Reiner’s 1984 movie This Is Spinal Tap, which was a mockumentary about one of England’s loudest bands. The film featured Reiner, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer. Since then, the development of Spinal Tap 2 was announced in May 2022, with the main cast confirmed to return.

Now, the Spinal Tap official YouTube channel has released the first look at Spinal Tap 2. The trailer sets the stage with an amp being plugged in and the sound dials being turned up to a classic 11. The last dial is even turned up to infinity. An explosion shows up on screen, and the release month for Spinal Tap II was also revealed, confirming the movie will come out in September. The teaser also advertised anniversary screenings of the original film, which will be coming this summer.

What This Means For Spinal Tap 2

The Film’s Marketing Will Rely On The First Movie

Spinal Tap II 11 on dial

As is evident in the trailer, the original movie is not in a key anniversary year right now. It would have been more apt for the sequel film to release last year, which was the 40th anniversary of its mockumentary predecessor. But even as the Reiner original hits its 41st anniversary, the film will still heavily rely on the connection to the iconic This is Spinal Tap for its success, as a big part of its marketing strategy seems to be the re-release, leading to the slate of the sequel a couple of months later.

The actual trailer content for Spinal Tap II reveals very little about the plot details, though it does harken back to one of the original’s most iconic lines. Reiner has teased elements of the mockumentary sequel, describing what the band has been up to. Nigel is running a cheese shop, David is writing a true-crime podcast, and Derek is “the curator of the museum of glue.” Even though the teaser does not show these elements, they are something to look forward to when it comes to Spinal Tap II.

Our Take On The Spinal Tap II Teaser

I’m Excited About Potential New Spinal Tap Songs

Even without much content, the Spinal Tap II teaser is exciting in its implication that the band will be back to loud, exciting performances in the next movie. The trailer song includes the 1984 classic “Stonehenge,” but I am most interested in what new original songs Reiner will have in store for the sequel. There are not many mockumentaries getting theatrical release these days, so it will also be fascinating to see how the ’80s sequel fares to a modern audience. But with musical parody still popular, I think it has the chance to do well.
