Steve Buscemi joins Sam Rockwell in the cast of Martin McDonagh’s upcoming movie Wild Horse Nine. One of the most prominent character actors in Hollywood, Buscemi has an impressive filmography, first shooting to fame with a supporting role in Quentin Tarantino’s debut Reservoir Dogs. He later appeared in several hit movies, including Pulp Fiction, Con Air, The Big Lebowski, and Ghost World. With a strong body of work on television too, including a supporting role in The Sopranos and the lead role in Boardwalk Empire, Buscemi remains one of the most recognizable and iconic stars of film and TV.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Buscemi will replace Mark Ruffalo in Wild Horse Nine, and is also joined by Parker Posey and John Malkovich. The movie, which McDonagh will write and direct, is described as a darkly comedic drama, and will begin shooting later this month in Rapa Nui, aka Easter Island. McDonagh’s long-time producing partners Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin will produce the feature, alongside Anita Overland, with Film4 and Blueprint Pictures also involved. Searchlight’s Taylor Friedman and Pete Spencer will oversee the project, which will be McDonagh’s fifth feature film.
What This Means For Wild Horse Nine
Seems To Be Classic McDonagh So Far
The story and character details are under wraps right now, but the strong ensemble cast will no doubt combine to bring McDonagh’s classic tropes and hallmarks to life. He is a director well-versed in working with ensembles, and bringing the right stars together for this project will enhance and complement the story. Wild Horse Nine will mark McDonagh’s first feature since the star-studded black tragicomedy The Banshees of Inisherin, and there could be more big-name stars set to join the cast in the coming weeks.
The project should look to push its performers, and rely on their versatility and talents for both comedic and dramatic elements, as well as tying together the many plot strands that are likely to make up the narrative.
Buscemi brings gravitas to the cast, and it will be his first project with McDonagh, who reunites with Rockwell after Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. McDonagh is one of the most exciting directors in the industry right now, known for his daring brand of storytelling, and Wild Horse Nine looks set to continue this approach. The project should look to push its performers, and rely on their versatility and talents for both comedic and dramatic elements, as well as tying together the many plot strands that are likely to make up the narrative.
Our Take On Wild Horse Nine
Should Be Another Strong Entry In McDonagh’s Filmography
The project will become one of the only productions to shoot on the iconic Easter Island, and this could make for some pretty breathtaking backdrops and scenery. With a strong cast and compelling visuals, Wild Horse Nine could become one of McDonagh’s best movies, but much will depend on the chemistry of the cast and the story that the director wishes to tell. One thing is certain: Buscemi will play a key role in any success the movie might have, and, while waiting, viewers can next see the seasoned actor in Wednesday season 2.
