Stranger Things Star’s Post-Apocalyptic Movie Debuts With Middling Rotten Tomatoes Score

Sadie Sink has become a rising star in the last decade. Beginning her career on stage by performing in shows including Annie and The Audience, she then transitioned into on-screen roles. Sink is best known for her portrayal of Max Mayfield in Stranger Things from 2017’s season 2 to the upcoming final outing with Stranger Things season 5, alongside Fear Street and The Whale.

Beyond Stranger Things final season, however, Sink’s career is set to make another major pivot. While Sink’s upcoming slate of projects is clear, she is set to return to her Broadway roots with a role in John Proctor Is The Villain, a modern retelling of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Before she returns to the stage, her new post-apocalyptic movie has seen reviews begin to be released.

Sadie Sink’s O’dessa’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Has Been Revealed

The Musical Is Divisive Among Critics

Featuring Sink, Murray Bartlett, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Regina Hall, O’dessa tells the tale of a farm girl’s journey across devastated lands in hopes of rescuing her love and a treasured heirloom. Directed by Jeremy Jasper and set to release on Hulu, the movie is distributed by Searchlight Pictures.

Following its premiere at SXSW, the critical response to O’dessa has been gathered on Rotten Tomatoes, allowing the site to issue their Tomatometer score. While the movie has managed to avoid a rotten score, it has instead accumulated a middling score from 15 critics’ reviews with a 67% approval rating. While the more negative reviews criticized the movie as shallow and lacking any originality and depth, others praised the creativity and performances as a highlight of the movie that makes the movie an enjoyable watch.

Our Thoughts on O’dessa’s Critical Reception

The Movie’s Divisiveness Could Draw More Viewers

Sadie Sink leaning against Kelvin Harrison Jr in O'dessa

Among many reviews for O’dessa, Sink’s performance has emerged as the most notable among the movie’s cast, and therefore a draw for audiences. As such, it is a strong start for what will be an incredibly important year for the star. While the capacity of her role is unknown given Max’s comatose fate, she is confirmed to be playing a key role in the final Stranger Things season.

While not the strongest rating to pull audiences in on, O’dessa has still netted a respectable score for itself following its SXSW premiere. Furthermore, its unique nature as a post-apocalyptic musical may be enough to draw viewers in upon its debut on Hulu on March 20. Though critics may have been split on what to make of O’dessa, a divisive response could lead to much online discussion about the post-apocalyptic between those who take a shine to it and those who may find issue with it, further drawing those unfamiliar with the movie in to see it for themselves.
