Marvel’s new Avengers team already has a major power problem to overcome in Phase 6’s upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Following the events of Captain America: Brave New World, it seems that the formation of a new Avengers team is right round the corner, and Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson will be bringing these currently-separate heroes together. It seems that Avengers: Doomsday is perfectly primed to debut this new version of the iconic MCU superhero team, but there is already one huge challenge that the new Avengers’ roster needs to manage.
The Avengers team has been inactive in the MCU since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame saw them come together to fight the Mad тιтan, Thanos, in the Battle of Earth. The absence of an Avengers team has been a source of criticism throughout Phases 4 and 5, so it’s exciting to see the wheels start to fall into motion for the team to be rebuilt in Avengers: Doomsday. It’s currently unclear which heroes Sam Wilson will recruit for his new Avengers, but he’ll need to be careful to select a line-up that allows him to avoid one annoying power problem.
The New Avengers Team Has Too Many Heroes Without Any Powers
Sam Wilson Will Be Leading An Avengers Team Despite Having No Superhuman Gifts
Since there are dozens of superheroes currently residing in the MCU, Sam Wilson is practically spoiled for choice when devising a new line-up for the Avengers team. However, many of these heroes share the same trait of having no natural superpowers, which means the Avengers team is running the risk of comprising mainly unpowered characters. Neither Sam Wilson’s Captain America nor Joaquín Torres’ Falcon, both of whom are expected to join the Avengers in Phase 6, have superpowers, and they’re not the only ones.
Peter Quill’s Star-Lord, James “Rhodey” Rhodes’ War Machine and Riri Williams’ Ironheart, among others, all also have no innate superhuman abilities in the MCU. While many of these heroes do utilize armored suits that give them some powers, such as Wilson’s vibranium costume and wing-suit and Rhodey’s Stark tech suit of armor, these specialized suits still only provide a certain level of protection. It’s hard to imagine these unpowered characters being capable of holding their own against a villain as powerful as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.
Captain America: Brave New World Avoided Giving 3 Heroes Superpowers
Sam Wilson, Joaquín Torres & Ruth Bat-Seraph All Could Have Had Powers In The MCU
Captain America: Brave New World had the perfect opportunity to drastically alter this power problem facing the MCU’s upcoming Avengers team. The Phase 5 movie could have marked the evolution of three new superpowered heroes in the MCU, but completely avoided making this happen, and even stripped two of them of their natural abilities from Marvel Comics. Most notably, Sam Wilson was conflicted over whether to take the super-soldier serum or not, and if he had, he would have been perfectly set up to be a powerful and mighty leader to the new Avengers.
Sam Wilson wasn’t the only Captain America: Brave New World character who missed out on superpowers, as Danny Ramirez’s Joaquín Torres also did. In Marvel Comics, Torres’ DNA is spliced with that of the falcon, Redwing, which gives him organic wings and bird-like abilities. What If…?’s Byrdie might have tested the waters for this in the MCU, but this didn’t come to fruition. Additionally, Marvel Studios removed Ruth Bat-Seraph’s mutant backstory from Marvel Comics, stripping Shira Haas’ character of her natural powers, and instead made her a former Black Widow ᴀssᴀssin.
How Marvel Can Solve The New Avengers’ Power Problem
There Are Still Many Heroes In The MCU Who Do Have Incredible Abilities
The MCU’s Thunderbolts team received some criticism when its line-up was revealed in 2022 because it features so many super-soldiers. The MCU’s new Avengers team may suffer the opposite problem by not featuring enough heroes with superhuman abilities. However, it’s unclear how big the Avengers team will be and who will be included in the line-up, so this issue could still be avoided. While neither Sam Wilson nor Joaquín Torres have innate abilities, their superhero costumes provide some impressive powers, so Wilson just needs to carefully consider which other heroes to recruit to the team.
Sam Wilson’s Captain America hasn’t yet been confirmed to be the new Avengers’ actual leader, though Captain America: Brave New World saw him recruit Joaquín Torres, the MCU’s new Falcon, to the team.
It would be fantastic to see a great deal of variety in the new Avengers team, so interesting new heroes could join the likes of Thor, the Hulk, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel and Spider-Man. Recently-introduced characters such as She-Hulk, Shang-Chi, Shuri’s Black Panther, any number of Eternals, Monica Rambeau’s PH๏τon, Daredevil, Moon Knight, and more could provide this variety. Avengers: Doomsday was previously reported to include the MCU’s biggest cast yet, so only time will tell which heroes come together to form the new Avengers team.
