Ne Zha 2 has officially pᴀssed Avengers: Infinity War after making a major milestone. Ne Zha 2 is a Chinese-language animated sequel to the 2019 film Ne Zha. Getting most of its revenue in China, the sequel has become a major hit in its home country and has some reach in international markets as well. Just a couple of weeks after releasing, Ne Zha 2 became the highest-grossing animated film of all time, beating out a record that 2024’s Inside Out 2 had held for less than a year.

As per Variety, Ne Zha 2 has reached another major milestone. The film has officially pᴀssed $2 billion at the global box office. After bringing in another $38.2 million from March 3 to March 9, its grand total comes out to $2.04 billion. It is the first animated movie and first Chinese movie ever to pᴀss $2 billion. This total also makes it the sixth-highest grossing film of all time, pᴀssing Avengers: Infinity War.

It Could Even Become The Fifth Highest-Grossing Movie Ever

Not only has no other animated film ever crossed $2 billion, but none have come that close. Inside Out 2, now demoted to the second-highest grossing animated movie of all time, only got as high as $1.69 billion. This is an impressive total, but misses the $2 billion mark by just over $300 million. With this total, it also set the record for the highest-grossing IMAX animated film and the highest-grossing movie from a single market with its huge return in China.

Ne Zha 2 is still in theaters, and, as evidenced by the recent record, still gaining significant revenue. As such, it has the chance to beat Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens to become the fifth-highest grossing movie of all time at the worldwide box office. It still needs over $20 million more to do so, but even with a significant week-over-week drop, this gross is possible. With тιтanic over $200 million ahead in its no. 4 slot, the fifth-highest grossing is likely where Ne Zha 2 would plateau.

Upon each milestone Ne Zha 2 hits, it seems more likely that this Q1 release will stay the highest-grossing movie of 2025. To do so, it will still have to beat out the December 2025 release Avatar: Fire and Ash, whose two predecessors are well ahead of Ne Zha 2 in their lifetime hauls. That said, even if it sinks to no. 2 later in the year, Ne Zha 2 will be remembered for its unprecedented and continually record-breaking box office run.
