As the casting for the new James Bond star continues, Pierce Brosnan has one demand about the next James Bond. It has been four years since Daniel Craig’s finale, No Time to Die, was released in 2021. Since then, there has been no public movement on the next Bond’s casting. That casting may now be beginning in earnest. Amazon recently purchased full creative control of the franchise from Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Watson. After paying nearly $1 billion for Bond, the studio should move quickly to begin to seeing a return on that investment.
With rumors flying that an American could be cast as the next Bond, Brosnan is worried about the future of the franchise’s casting efforts. While he is happy for Broccoli and Wilson, he is worried that Amazon may cast a non-British actor, per The Telegraph. Brosnan described it as “a given” that Bond should be played by a British actor.
What Brosnan’s Comments Mean For James Bond
Amazon Needs To Cast A British Bond
While Brosnan insists that the next Bond has to be British, that has not always been true in the past. George Lazenby, for instance, is Australian. Brosnan himself is an Irish actor who was born in a town just north of Dublin. Ireland was already independent at the time, so Brosnan’s comments are somewhat misleading. After all, if Bond has not always been led by a British actor, then Amazon is not necessarily held to the same restrictions. The next Bond movie should be faithful to the originals, but it does not need to have even higher standards.
Amazon has never hinted at casting an American.
Even so, much of the concern regarding the casting is about an American actor being placed in the leading role. This speculation does not currently have much merit. There have been some unconfirmed reports that Amazon is planning to cast a man from Britain or a Commonwealth state in the role, and Amazon has never hinted at casting an American. Brosnan’s public insistence that an English star is a “given” will likely only continue to drive Amazon in a more British direction.
Our Take On An American James Bond
Amazon Should Stick With English Actors
The idea of an American James Bond is rightfully concerning. After all, 007 is meant to be the premiere agent of MI6. Other franchises can cast Americans as CIA agents, but the James Bond franchise should focus on the U.K., even if it has had non-British stars. Believing that an American worked his way up through MI6 so quickly would simply be a strain on the imagination. There is no shortage of English actors who would be more than capable of carrying the role. Brosnan and Lazenby were excellent, but the next star should come from the United Kingdom.
