I’m Convinced This Moana 2 Cut Scene Is Already Setting Up Her Sister’s Special Powers

A deleted scene from Moana 2 reveals what Simea’s magical powers could be in the third installment. Despite her small role in the sequel, Moana’s sister’s personality and interests already stand out as starting points of a larger character arc. Already a fan-favorite character in Moana 2, Simea is certain to play a big role in future movies, and the emotional cut sequence may have just confirmed it. While she may not have played a part in Moana 2‘s epic ending, Simea’s hinted abilities could be necessary to ensure the future of Motunui.

The revealing moment seems to be setting up the young child for a crucial and necessary part in Moana 3, which would even successfully set her apart from her powerful sister. Though Simea’s powers aren’t explicitly confirmed in Moana 2, all signs indicate that she is meant for a grand and heroic purpose, just like Moana. As Moana 2‘s reviews praise its expansion of Polynesian culture and mythology, it makes perfect sense that Simea will embody the sister tradition to wayfinding.

A Moana 2 Deleted Scene Suggests Simea’s Voice Is A Special Power

Simea’s Chant Travels The Oceans And Reaches Her Sister

In the deleted Moana 2 scene, Simea stands by the shore, clearly worried about her sister being out on her dangerous mission to find Motufetū. Wishing to help Moana, she calls out to the god Tagaloa with a chant, asking him to watch over travelers. Now the franchise’s theme, the new version of “Tulou Tagaloa (Si e Va’ai Mai)” stands out from Moana 2‘s soundtrack as one of the most beautiful songs in the Samoan language. What makes the moment more emotional is that Moana, caught in a ruthless storm, can hear Simea’s song.

Moana 2 will begin streaming on Disney+ starting March 12.

At first glance, the scene could merely be hinting at Simea’s potential future leader role, as the people of Motunui join behind her and complete the chorus. However, it is clear the child’s song is unlike any other, as it creates glowing waves in the ocean and reaches her sister despite the long distance. This heavily suggests Simea’s voice has magical qualities, and could, in future Moana installments, help her communicate with her sister even if they are worlds apart.

Moana 3 Could Make Simea’s Voice Powers Official

Simea’s Communicative Powers Would Make Her Crucial To Motunui’s Survival

Co-director Ledoux Miller explains the beautiful scene was meant to capture “the bond between the two sisters,” but, ultimately, no longer fit into the sequel’s story. It’s highly possible the moment was cut because it opens many possibilities that Moana 2 wouldn’t have enough time to develop properly, especially as the movie was already trying to introduce many new characters while building up to its big twist. Notably, Moana 3 could solve Simea’s main problem, but also incorporate the idea of her special powers.

Though her magical voice isn’t explicitly hinted at in Moana 2, Simea’s other qualities already suggest her unique role within the franchise.

As Moana 3 is set to fully explore the Polynesian gods, it also has the perfect opportunity to expand on the area’s rich culture and traditions, which Simea has already started to represent. Though her magical voice isn’t explicitly hinted at in Moana 2, Simea’s other qualities already suggest her unique role within the franchise. If creators develop her hinted communicative powers, they’d successfully make Simea essential to the survival of Motunui and differentiate her from Moana.

What Simea’s Magical Voice Would Mean For Moana 3

Simea’s Storyteller Role Could Allow Her To Preserve History & Communicate With Ancestors

Being that baby Moana foreshadows her adult character arc, the same could apply to Simea’s qualities as a toddler. Most notably, she is highly interested in stories, hearing them and telling them. She keeps asking how things work, gets excited when her family tells stories, and even recounts in her own words what Moana told her about her first quest. Simea’s magical voice could make her occupy a valuable and highly-respected role in her community, as “teacher of stories” or “keeper of history,” an essential figure in Polynesian culture.

Since Motunui’s survival was central to both the first film and Moana 2, creators should emphasize storytelling as a vital means of preserving Polynesian culture. Simea’s magical voice would help the sad reality of Moana’s demigod path, as she’d be able to reach Moana despite the distance. Additionally, she could also pᴀss on her sister’s findings to Motunui, actively preserving history and community. Simea’s chant in Moana 2′s deleted scene perfectly aligns with the Polynesian storyteller’s abilities, and could be setting up her ability to communicate with her ancestors, allowing her to gain essential wisdom and knowledge.
