“The Dog Is The Main Character”: Ke Huy Quan’s “Bizarre” New Horror Movie Gets Intriguing Tease From Co-Star Lili Reinhart

The bizarre format of the upcoming horror movie Bad Boy has been explained by one of its stars. The movie, which is set to begin filming in August, will follow a young woman (Lili Reinhart, who played Betty Cooper in all seven seasons of Riverdale) attempting to escape the clutches of a serial killer (Ke Huy Quan of The Goonies, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Loki season 2). It will be directed by Jacob Chase (Come Play) from a Black List screenplay by Travis Braun (Pupstruction).

ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley had a chance to sit down with Lili Reinhart and director Uta Briesewitz while they were promoting their upcoming mystery thriller American Sweatshop at SXSW. During the conversation, Reinhart described Bad Boy, saying that the dog is the main character” and that “you see what the dog sees.” She said that while she loves horror, she hasn’t had the opportunity to do many horror projects, so the movie was “kind of just perfect,” especially because she also loves dogs. Read her full quote below:

It’s a genre movie and the dog is the main character. And so you see what the dog sees. I love horror so much as a genre and I haven’t done a lot of horror. So I was like, when I sign onto a horror movie, there has to be something crazy or interesting or bizarre about it. And I love dogs, so it’s kind of just perfect.

What Lili Reinhart’s Bad Boy Comments Mean

The Movie Presents Her With An Unusual Opportunity

From the way Reinhart describes it, the upcoming horror movie will look and feel like almost no other release that has come before. POV horror that is not found footage is exceedingly rare, and the majority of the examples are from the perspective of human beings, such as the 2012 slasher remake Maniac, which starred Elijah Wood as a serial killer. The most prominent modern analogue to Bad Boy would likely be Steven Soderbergh’s experimental haunted house movie Presence, which told its story from the perspective of the ghost.

Found footage movies like The Blair Witch Project, [REC], Paranormal Activity, and Cloverfield are typically presented as footage sH๏τ by cameras held or set up by the characters.

The Ke Huy Quan movie’s unusual setup will allow Reinhart her most notable opportunity to explore the horror genre. In spite of her love of horror, the only movies in the genre in which she has appeared are 2011’s Lilith and the 2016 thriller The Good Neighbor. However, it is possible that this new movie will open doors for her, as horror movies have courted Riverdale alumni in the past, perhaps most notably the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel, which had Reinhart’s co-star Camila Mendes attached before she dropped out due to scheduling issues.

Our Take On Bad Boy

It Could Be The Right Move For Ke Huy Quan

From the way that Reinhart describes the movie, it seems that her Bad Boy co-star Ke Huy Quan is continuing to take risks with unusual genre-bending movies after starring in the multiverse sci-fi action тιтle Everything Everywhere All At Once. This seems like the best move for Quan, as he won an Oscar for his supporting performance in EEAAO, whereas his lead role in the more conventional 2025 action-comedy Love Hurts did not pan out, as the movie has only grossed $17.3 million against its $18 million budget in addition to earning a dismal 18% Rotten Tomatoes score.
