A Complete Unknown Lands Its Final Box Office Milestone As The Award Campaign Ends

James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown has pᴀssed its final box office milestone. The movie, which is also co-written by Mangold, is based on the 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald, and focuses on Dylan’s career as a successful folk musician, and his controversial crossover to an electric sound. A Complete Unknown‘s cast is fronted by Timothée Chalamet, with Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, and Scoot McNairy in supporting roles.

Per The Numbers, A Complete Unknown has pᴀssed the $120 million box office milestone worldwide, taking $76 million in domestic grosses and $46 million internationally. The film looks set to add to that total as it winds down its theatrical run, but is unlikely to increase much more. With a production budget of $50-$70 million, it has posted a modest profit, and hopes will be high that it can continue a successful stint when it moves onto streaming.

What This Means For A Complete Unknown’s Box Office

The Film Had A Strong Run & Could Perform Well On Streaming

A Complete Unknown has posted a modestly impressive box office run and could pick up some more receipts before finally exiting theaters. Fresh from its theatrical run and the hype of Oscar buzz, the movie could well be set for some further success when it hits streaming. A Complete Unknown is set to drop on Hulu later this month and could have a strong showing there as well, particularly as it allows audiences to enjoy a music and movie combo from the comfort of home.

Dylan himself remains an intriguing topic for exploration, and having a seasoned director such as Mangold at the helm only added to the project’s prestige.

A Complete Unknown‘s box office success was no doubt buoyed by an impressive performance during awards season, where it received eight Oscar nominations and three Golden Globe nominations. Chalamet also won a SAG Award for his performance. Dylan himself remains an intriguing topic for exploration, and having a seasoned director such as Mangold at the helm only added to the project’s prestige. A Complete Unknown will likely enjoy a sustained audience for a very long time, making the sort of evergreen movie that people always pick up.

There are a lot of factors that combined to make A Complete Unknown a box office success, and one of the key ones has been the strong central performance from Chalamet. Even though he didn’t win the Oscar for Best Actor, there was enough sustained buzz that many recognized the impressiveness of his acting. As the biopic was targeting an older audience that, in recent years, has struggled to return to movie theaters, A Complete Unknown‘s upcoming streaming debut could see it reach a whole new audience and further surpᴀss expectations.
