Avengers: Doomsday Director Reveals Robert Downey Jr’s Deep Method Work For Doctor Doom: “It’s A Very Intense Process”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to be majorly impacted by Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, and the latest update regarding the actor’s work getting into the role has teased more about what to expect. While the MCU timeline will finally introduce Doctor Doom following Marvel Studios getting the Fantastic Four rights back, Phase 6 is pulling its biggest twist yet, as Downey Jr. will bring Doom to life. As Doctor Doom will factor into Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, fans are actively wanting to learn more about how this concept is going to work.

In a new interview with ET, the Russo brothers were asked about Downey Jr.’s upcoming return to the MCU as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. While plot details remained under wraps, Joe Russo shared that Downey Jr. is in the midst of an “intense process” in terms of preparing for his Doctor Doom debut, sharing the following:

Joe Russo: It’s a very intense process developing the character. He’s so immersed in it. He is so dialed in. [Downey’s] writing backstory, costume ideas … I think he just loves really rich, three-dimensional characters and I think he sees a real opportunity here with that character.

What Joe Russo’s Update On Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom Means For The MCU

While Downey Jr. may be writing more of Doctor Doom’s backstory, it should be pointed out that it doesn’t mean that he is actually one of the official screenwriters for Avengers: Doomsday. As of right now, Stephen McFeely is the only screenwriter who will pen Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. It’s common for actors to write a “backstory” as almost a companion piece to the material they are getting from the actual scribes, just to have an idea of where their character comes from, which could help their overall performance.

What is clear with Russo’s comments about how Downey Jr. is tackling Doctor Doom, though, is that the Iron Man star clearly wants to make sure Victor’s MCU debut is as fine-tuned as possible. The actor has talked about getting a better idea of Victor’s larger role in the Marvel Comics canon, which makes sense given Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom will be one of the most crucial aspects that The Multiverse Saga needs to get right with Phase 6. Since Avengers: Doomsday is where fans will seemingly meet him, there definitely needs to be a strong first impression with Doctor Doom.
