I’m Pretty Sure These 10 Scenes Are The Funniest In Jim Carrey’s Career

Jim Carrey has been making hilarious movies since the 1990s, so it isn’t easy to pick his funniest scenes. Carrey is known for his rubbery facial expressions, his loud, in-your-face style of comedy and his wonderfully puerile jokes. Movies like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Truman Show flaut his dramatic chops, but sometimes nothing beats his silly comedy movies.

Jim Carrey’s ’90s comedies produced many of his most iconic scenes. He burst onto the scene in 1994, making Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber in the same year. He followed this blistering start with more hilarious comedies, and many of his funniest movies are just as enjoyable as ever.

Evan’s Breakdown On Air

Bruce Almighty (2003)

Steve Carrel as Evan reads from the teleprompter live on air in Bruce Almighty

Bruce Almighty stars Jim Carrey as a man who is gifted with the powers of God. While Bruce attempts to use his powers to make people happy, he also has time for some personal indulgences, including one great scene in which he messes with his stick-in-the-mud coworker.

Jim Carrey and Steve Carell are both in fine form in Bruce Almighty.

Jim Carrey and Steve Carell are both in fine form in Bruce Almighty, and the scene in which Bruce distorts Evan’s voice while he’s presenting the news is probably the best moment that the two actors share. Evan tries to keep up appearances while uncontrollably spewing nonsense. It’s rare to see another actor who can work alongside Carrey without immediately being overshadowed.

The Grinch Directs Max

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

Jim Carrey as The Grinch dressed in a Santa suit and acting like a director to Max the dog in How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Universal Pictures

Like several other movies based on Dr. Seuss books, How the Grinch Stole Christmas has proven rather divisive, but it has become more and more popular over the years. Whether it’s a good adaptation or not is one question, but Jim Carrey’s bombastic, exuberant performance is well worth watching.

The Grinch is a solitary character, sneering down at the Whos in Whoville from his mountaintop home. This means that Carrey has plenty of scenes on his own, but he’s the kind of comedic actor who can conjure hilarious moments out of thin air. One such moment comes when The Grinch directs Max before their plan to steal Christmas unfolds. Carrey’s satirical take on the craft of acting is funny, but what puts it over the top is the fact that he’s performing a parody of his own director, Ron Howard.

The Battle At Medieval Times

The Cable Guy (1996)

Jim Carrey in armor in The Cable Guy

The Cable Guy surprised some audiences at the time, since it was a lot darker than some of Jim Carrey’s other ’90s comedies. However, it still works to Carrey’s strengths, delivering some of his most memorable scenes. One example is the unnecessarily violent battle at a medieval-themed restaurant.

Matthew Broderick works well as an anxious counterpoint to Carrey’s manic, aggressive energy in The Cable Guy. Their fight scene brings the best out of both actors, but it’s the absurdity of the situation that gets the most laughs. There’s also no real reason that the staff are so keen on accommodating these two customers when they want to swing flails at each other and joust on horseback.

Fletcher Roasts The Boardroom

Liar Liar (1997)

Jim Carrey in Liar Liar

Liar Liar strings together plenty of hilarious scenes, from Fletcher’s breakdown when he discovers that he can’t lie to his extreme fight with himself in the bathroom. The boardroom roast scene is a combination of Jim Carrey’s talent for physical comedy and his excellent delivery.

The boardroom roast perfectly subverts the audience’s expectations, as Fletcher scores a rare win despite insulting and antagonizing his boss. There are also plenty of nice touches that keep the humor rolling, like Fletcher ripping off one man’s shoddy hairpiece or laughing in Miranda’s face. It’s all in wonderfully bad taste, but the risqué jokes make it even funnier.

The Mighty Mouse Performance

Man On The Moon (1999)

jim-carrey-man-on-the-moon

Something of an oddity in Jim Carrey’s filmography, Man on the Moon straddles the divide between his uproarious comedies and his more emotional, complex movies. It’s a biopic of one of Carrey’s heroes, Andy Kaufman, with Carrey delivering a remarkable performance that often taps into Kaufman’s unusual essence.

Kaufman’s best performances shattered every rule in comedy, interrogating the audience and highlighting the ludicrous artifice of the form. Carrey’s recreation of Kaufman’s famous rendition of the Mighty Mouse theme song underlines how joyous and unexpected this approach could be. Of course, Carrey can only claim partial credit for this hilarious scene, since he’s merely acting as a conduit for Kaufman’s genius.

Ace Escapes A Great White Shark

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)

Jim Carrey, soaking wet in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Ace Ventura is a preposterous comedic character, and not many actors would be able to make the obnoxious pet detective so funny, but Jim Carrey’s outlandish performance is brilliantly overblown. Ace is often the funny man surrounded by a world that’s much more serious than he’s equipped to deal with, but he can also roll with some absurdity if it seeks him out.

Ace is entirely out of place when his investigation leads him to a high-class party, and his strange appearance is made even worse after a brief tussle with a great white shark. Re-entering the party, Ace stands proudly in front of the guests. His comedically woeful attempt to play off his appearance creates one of Ace Ventura‘s best quotes: “Do NOT go in there!

4

Killing The Cow

Me, Myself & Irene (2000)

The cow killing scene in Me, Myself and Irene

Me, Myself and Irene was Jim Carrey’s second Farrelly brothers comedy, and he stars as a mild-mannered police officer with an evil alter ego. This shows two sides to Carrey’s talents as a comedic actor. He may get most of his laughs as the brash and rubber-faced Hank, but Charlie’s more reserved nature creates some awkward comedic moments.

Me, Myself and Irene mines a lot of jokes from its strange premise, but one of the movie’s funniest scenes is a standalone gag that could just easily appear in any other Farrelly brothers movies. As Charlie comes across a wounded cow lying in the road, he decides to put it out of its misery, but the cow refuses to die after several bullets to the head. The way Carrey throws his full weight into trying to bludgeon and strangle the animal creates a hilarious slice of pitch-black comedy.

3

Cuban Pete

The Mask (1994)

Jim Carrey as the Mask Dances During the Cuban Pete Dance Number in The Mask

Most of Jim Carrey’s comedies are designed to accommodate his strengths, or else he bends the movie to his will. Still, The Mask seems like a perfect vehicle for Carrey, letting him run wild as his rubber-faced antics are given endless new premises to play with.

Carrey shows his roots in improv and sketch comedy in The Mask, making it hard to pick a single scene from the rapid-fire comedy that he churns out. One highlight is the Cuban Pete song, as The Mask leads the surrounding police officers in a song and dance, even though they are trying to arrest him.

2

Robotnik’s Dance Scene

Sonic The Hedgehog (2020)

Jim Carrey as Robotnik touching a holographic display in Sonic the Hedghog

Jim Carrey plays an outstanding supporting role in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. He doesn’t have as many scenes as other characters, but Carrey can get a laugh every time he’s on screen. His performances as Robotnik evoke his best comedies from decades ago, as he is given license to go big.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has set a 2027 release date, but Jim Carrey’s return hasn’t been confirmed.

Robotnik’s dance scene is one of many great Jim Carrey moments in Sonic the Hedgehog. The villain begins by analyzing one of Sonic’s quills, but his music soon takes over his body. This showcases Carrey’s inimitable physical comedy, but the real kicker is the way Robotnik yells a compliment at his ᴀssistant with enough venom to make it sound like an insult.

1

The Rhino Birth

Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995)

Ace Ventura When Nature Calls Rhino Scene

A rare Jim Carrey sequel, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls is an example of a comedy sequel that’s just as good as the original. With Ace travelling to Africa, there are plenty of great scenes as the pet detective grapples with an unfamiliar world. The scene in which he pilots a mechanical rhinoceros is certainly the most memorable, however.

The perplexed family watching on in silence helps make this an unforgettable scene.

After overheating in the stuffy rhinoceros, Ace tries to escape via the only route available to him. Carrey’s pained facial expressions, the grotesque absurdity of the visuals and the perplexed family watching on in silence all combine to make this an unforgettable scene. It’s repulsive, but hilarious nonetheless.
